31 Days of Read-Alouds: Ox-Cart Man

by Toni Herrbach

When I was a young child I loved pretending I was an explorer or settler who had to build their own home, make their own food and supplies. That’s probably why I love the story of Ox-Cart Man so much. In  Ox-Cart Man our man loads up his wagon with supplies and journeys to the city to trade their goods for things for his family.

I love the illustrations in this story and it is a great way to talk about the seasons with your younger children and trade and pioneer life for your older kids.

This is one of my favorite books and I think I read it too my kids way more than they wanted to hear it, although they did like discussing what they would want their father to bring back for them if they lived back then.

One fun activity you can do to include kids of all ages is to have one child pack up their “wagon” and have them journey to town. (Through the yard, house, etc) Once they get their, have them trade with other kids

31 Days of Read-Alouds: Harry the Dirty Dog

by Toni Herrbach

Harry the Dirty Dog is a series of books about Harry, a dog who loves everything. In Harry the Dirty Dog, Harry gets so dirty on his adventures that his family doesn’t even recognize him!

This is a great book if you have a dog, or even if you don’t! Dogs in books are much less expensive and you won’t be sweeping your floors every day. 😉

31 Days of Read-Alouds: The Red Balloon

by Toni Herrbach

The Red Balloon was one of my absolute favorite books when I was a kid. This is quite ironic considering I don’t even like balloons! However I loved this story of a boy, Pascal, who lived in Paris. Pascal was terribly lonely because he had no brothers or sisters and his mother would not let him keep any of the stray animals he brought home.

One day, on his way to school, he found a red balloon tied to a street lamp. He climbed the lamp, freed the balloon and kept it. The story follows Pascal’s adventure with his red balloon.

The illustrations in this read-aloud are photographs, some black and white and some color. Pascal encounters a “gang of boys” who want his balloon. This provides a great opportunity to talk to your children about bullying as it does happen in this book.

the red balloon book

The story does have a happy ending and while I was looking through the pages to write up this post, I was flooded with memories from my own childhood.

The The Red Balloon is set in Paris, France so this is a great time to incorporate some world geography into your read aloud time.

Activities for The Red Balloon

  • Locate Paris on a map
  • Eiffel Tower coloring page
  • Play in the rain with a balloon
  • French flag coloring page
  • Carry a balloon with you all day
  • Balloon gas experiment
  • The Letter “B” worksheets
  • My color flip book

31 Days of Read-Alouds: Over in the Meadow

by Toni Herrbach

Over in the Meadow is a beautifully illustrated book about all the animals who live in the meadow. On each page we find another mother animal and her children. The children increase as you go along in the book and each group of baby animals are instructed to do something. Owls wink, frogs swim, beavers build, etc.

When my boys were little I loved books like these because I had them act out the parts to help get all the wiggles out during story time.

over in the meadow book

This book is great to read before you go on a nature walk or a park. One fun activity would be to make an animal check off sheet so your child can check off any animals he/ she sees while exploring outside.

How to Make an Apple Pie and See the World

by Toni Herrbach

How to Make an Apple Pie and See the World is a newer book for our family. After reading it I’m sad my older kids didn’t get to experience it!

how to make an apple pie

This is the story of the making of an apple pie. It is very easy, unless of course the market is closed and you have to travel the world to find the best ingredients. This is a great book to tie into geography so make sure you have a globe or google maps when you are reading this fun book with your kids.

Get out your rolling pin because you simply must make an apple pie with this book.

Activities for How to Make an Apple Pie and See the World

Make an apple pie.

If you are like me you are probably thinking… apple pie, no thanks! I don’t need to spend hours rolling out pie crust in the middle of a school day.

I understand, I’m mess- challenged too. So here’s an apple pie recipe that only requires five ingredients including the pre-made crust. If you are feeling adventurous there’s a link to a great crust recipe in the ingredients, but only if you really want too! Your kids will be thrilled with a store bought crust too!
