Whole Wheat Pancakes at The Happy Housewife

These delicious and fluffy pancakes can be made with 100% whole wheat flour. I used 3 cups ground kamut and 1 cup soft white wheat.

These fluffy whole wheat pancakes are better for you than the box mix and only take about 5 minutes to mix up.

Author: Toni Anderson

Ingredients

  • 3 cups buttermilk
  • 4 eggs
  • 1/2 cup butter melted
  • 1/2 cup white sugar
  • 1 tablespoon and 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 2 teaspoons baking soda
  • 2 teaspoons salt
  • 4 cups whole wheat flour

Instructions

  • Mix all the liquid ingredients.
  • Beat for one minute on high.
  • Mix in sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
  • Slowly mix in flour until batter is smooth but thick.
  • Cook on a hot (350 degree) buttered griddle.

Notes

This recipe makes enough pancakes for a family of nine. If you aren’t feeding a baseball team, freeze the extra pancakes.

It’s funny, because I JUST made my hubby pancakes this morning, and he was wondering what it would take to make them homemade!
I have never made them homemade; I love the GFS mix so I haven’t been in too much of a hurry to find a good recipe! I sent him this recipe though, maybe I’ll try this one! Thanks for posting!

Oh! My! Stars! I love me some pancakes! Thanks for sharing a healthier version. Now I won’t feel as bad when I drench them in syrup and butter. 😉

i just bought buttermilk and wheat flour– things that i NEVER keep on hand. i think we’re going to have pancakes tomorrow but not until lunch. i’m not very predictable when it comes to waking up early enough to cook a real breakfast. my boys have come to love their toaster strudels (yum) and hot pockets (gag).

I have to second the gag factor on the hot pockets! I love breakfast so much more than lunch. I hate breaking up our day… :).

I’m confused by the term soft flour and (although this is a rare occurrence) googling it didn’t clarify a whole lot. I have wheat flour and pastry wheat flour…
I love your site, don’t comment often but I visit everyday. I’m at the end of raising my 4 kids, but I’ve been sending lots of the young mom from church here for helpful tips. Thanks.

Thanks for sending the young moms to my site. Another term for soft white wheat flour would be whole wheat pastry flour. Hope that clears things up.
      Blessings-

Cool! I am getting ready to order Kamut – as it’s a grain my wheat-intolerant daughter can handle – and will have to try your recipe as soon as the order comes in! Thanx for the recipe!

Had my nieces over this weekend, so with a total of 7 kids from ages 3-19 to feed I was lucky to have found your recipe. This is definitely my new favorite pancake recipe especially since they freeze so well. Thanks for sharing your recipes.

These look so awesome! I’m always looking for great waffle and pancake recipes but was wondering if you buy your buttermilk or make your own? Can milk be used instead or buttermilk or maybe even a mixture of milk and yogurt?
I’ll probably experiment around with it but thought I’d ask anyway.

I LOVE this recipe and have been making it for at least a year, but I make up batches of the dry ingredients and store in the pantry in Mason jars… I have no idea about the time before this last, but I KNOW I didn’t add sugar!! Ha ha if the last batch didn’t have any they still tasted GREAT!! and bonus sugar free!!
