Safety and Repurposing an Old Crib

by Toni Herrbach

Crib safety is something we should all take seriously. I remember before our first child was born we had to turn down the offer of a free crib (even though we were broke) because it didn’t meet current safety standards and we didn’t want to take any chances.

We have purchased used cribs for many of our children, but we always checked out the safety standards before we made a decision.

Before you purchase a used crib please read this article from the Consumer Product Safety Commission.

If you have an old crib that you can’t sell due to the new regulations check out this article for thirty ideas for repurposing your crib.

I love these ideas! I also repurposed a crib rail in my sewing room and love the way it looks! http://gabrielsgoodtidings.blogspot.com/2011/07/baby-bed-rail-transformed-to-vintage.html

We re purposed our baby bed rails as a ladder rack for holding dolls and stuffed animals. I will have to do a post on it sometime!

There are some great ideas here! My husband used part of the crib rails from our daughters’ crib to create a railing for the loft in their playhouse.

It is now illegal to sell used cribs of any sort (garage sales, craigslist) and baby pantries and such no longer accept them. This is a great way to keep them out of the landfills!

Great ideas to reuse an item nobody can use again for a crib. I think crib manufacturers need to get themselves on board and build cribs within specs and make them well so they don’t get recalled. Our children were 4 years apart and we were able to reuse the crib. That was early 1980s but still there wasn’t the turn around on cribs then as there is now.

Great ideas. Turning it into a desk is my favorite.
