Do you have clothes from your senior year of high school lurking in the back of your closet, clothes you haven’t worn in years? Bedroom closets can be a huge source of clutter. With most newer homes having master bedroom closets the size of a small country, the temptation to hang on to every single item of clothing since the 10th grade can be great.
I am guilty of hanging on to clothes that are too small because I am sure that one day I will fit into them. And sometimes I do end up fitting into them, but by that time they are hopelessly out of style!
I have found that with clothing less is more. A few basic pieces can go a long way, and you will be less frustrated in the mornings while you are getting dressed. If items don’t fit, are not your style or color, or you just don’t like them, get rid of them! If you are a clothes hoarder have a friend come over and help you.
Having a closet full of clothes that you don’t wear makes it harder to find the clothes you do wear.
A few years ago, one of my more stylish friends came over and helped me clean out my closet. While it was painful at the time, she really helped me see what items were worth keeping and which ones needed to be tossed. The nice thing about clothes is that they can be donated or given to someone else. There are very few items that end up in the garbage can.
When was the last time you gave your closet an honest clean out? I cleaned mine at the beginning of the year and I love all the extra space!

Just did the kiddos closets….ugh, where does all that stuff come from?

I cleaned out my closet today because my mother gave me some wooden hangers…and what a difference. I didn’t have a lot of clothes to get rid of since I keep it pretty to a minimum, but having a uniform look in the closet is very nice.

We clean ours out 2 times a year. Spring and Fall. Our closet is small, and I don’t have room to keep all of our clothes in it. I’m definitely not a hoarder, and if it wasn’t worn that season it goes.

I used to clean out my closet and drawers once a month. It has been a long time since I have been that organized. I always feel better after a clean out though. I really don’t mind getting rid of things that I have not used in a year unless they have monetary value.

I am very organized in our closet space bc they are small closets and only 2 in the apartment. However I am super guilty of hanging onto clothes that are too small. I feel like getting rid of them means I have given up hope and stopped trying to lose the extra weight.

I cleaned out the bottom of mine this morning – threw out two pair of worn-out shoes, am donating a bag of baby clothing and one of adult things that no longer fit! Feels good!

I love the suggetion my sister gave me about turning your hangers the “other” way. When you clean out your closet, turn all the hangers the “other” way, then as you wear the clothes and hang them back up, you will hang them up your “normal” way. At the end of the season, you can easily tell which items have never been worn!

I do pretty well in this area, but a couple weeks ago I went through my clothes again. I got rid of all those “I might just fit back into them again” clothes… off to Goodwill. And I threw out my old “going away” dress from 20 years ago. It’s hopelessly out of style and the fabric has yellowed, so I know I’d never wear it again. I have a great photo of me wearing it on our wedding day, so I really don’t need to have it in my closet for memory’s sake. It felt *so* good to let it go! 🙂

You’ve inspired me to take the plunge. I’m 27 and realized I still have a few things from my sophomore year of college. Three babies later and I’m holding on to some kind of dream, apparently! Good post!

LOL! It has been almost 12 years since I’ve worked outside the home…I finally got rid of the last of my work clothes last year. If I ever find myself in need of a job again, those clothes would also be “hopelessly out of date”, too, so why was I keeping them?
