Scrumptious Summertime Treat

June 29, 2009 · 27 comments

In my last post I wrote about having food on hand for those unexpected guests. A trifle is a delicious and beautiful dessert that is sure to make an impression. The ingredients for trifle are ones you can keep on hand in your pantry and freezer.

Ingredients

  • Angel Food Cake Mix
  • Vanilla Pudding Mix
  • Cool Whip
  • 2 different kinds of frozen or fresh fruit that taste good together.

Bake the angel food cake according to the directions and cool. While the cake is baking make your pudding.

Photobucket

Once the cake is cool, tear off pieces to line the bottom of your bowl or pan. (A glass bowl is best because you can see the layers)

Photobucket

Then spread a layer of pudding over the cake.

Photobucket

Then add a layer of fruit. If you are using frozen fruit, thaw your fruit first. For this trifle I chose strawberries.

Photobucket

Then add your second fruit layer.

Photobucket

Repeat until you reach the top of your bowl. Top with a layer of whipped cream.

This recipe is excellent! I’ve tasted the famous Toni Trifle more than once, and it’s a wonderful dessert…tasty and elegant.

I use yellow cake, too, since I don’t have a good gluten-free angle food cake recipe. I usually drizzle a little orange juice over the cake layers to make it real moist.

My mom used to call that a “dump cake.” I loved it! BTW, thanks for the Vonage recommendation. I receive a lot of mailings from them, and I think I should seriously check it out.

Looks delish! I have done something similar but in a “chocolate version”! I layer brownie pieces, chocolate pudding, cool whip and strawberries(if I have any!). OR broken Oreos, chocolate pudding, vanilla pudding with cream cheese as part of the milk, and cool whip.

Saying this makes me realize I need to do this again just for my crew! I got birthdays at the end of the week so it would be a perfect time to indulge! :)

Thanks for the great recipe. You really never know when you will need a quick easy dessert. Also, thanks for the Vonage tip. I hadn’t realized that it was that way.
My boys both loved “Around the World in Eighty Days.” We have been working our way through several of the children’s illustrated classics. We were able to get several through the library. I wanted them to be familiar with the stories now before they get older and it comes time to read the unabridged version. Thanks for all the tips. Blessings.

This recipe looks really delicious. Plus it’s really simple to make. I am definitely adding this to my summer meal plan. I am trying to keep it simple this summer by making really quick and simple meals and this dessert is a winner. Thank you so much for the recipe.
