Chocolate Syrup

Since many of you have asked if the boy got chocolate syrup in his milk, I decided I needed to respond. I am sad to report that he did not get chocolate syrup for two reasons. First, I didn’t think we had any (it is not something I normally purchase) and second with all the excitement I forgot and he didn’t bug me about it.

One of my real life friends sent me a recipe for chocolate syrup you can make from scratch. It looks easy and I will be trying it once we return from our camping trip.

Chocolate Syrup

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup cocoa
  • 1 cup water
  • 2 cups sugar
  • 1/8 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon  vanilla

Mix the cocoa and the water in a saucepan. Heat and stir until cocoa is dissolved.

Add the sugar and stir to dissolve. Boil exactly 3 mins. Remove from burner, add the salt and vanilla. Keep in a refrigerator. This will keep for several months. This makes slightly more than a pint.

I have made more than this at one time and put in cute jars, with a ribbon, or put in a basket. It makes a great inexpensive gift :)

Thanks Steph for the recipe!

First, congrats on the new baby!

Second, I love this recipe. My kids won’t drink plain white milk at all so I may have to try this. The powdered stuff I’ve been buying for their milk is almost $4 per container. Ouch!

I did make my own chocolate syrup for my son as well. He did not like it, but it weaned him off of chocolate syrup. My nephew liked it, and I didn’t think it was bad. And congratulations on the baby! How do you do it all?

Ok. A little confession here from the Dad. I got chocolate syrup for free with a coupon. Yep, that’s me the nutritional underminer with a medical degree. I bought the chocolate chips for baking/pancakes (whole wheat of course) and if I bought 3 bags I got chocolate syrup for free.

I used it in a very healthy smoothie tonight so – Yes my son did get the chocolate syrup.

Please don’t tell my wife.

LOL—You guys are hilarious! Sounds like my husband and me…

I must say, I have been on the receiving end of this yummy chocolate syrup (last Christmas to be exact), and it IS awesome! (Thanks Steph!!) And I am grateful to finally be getting the requested recipe for this yummy treat :D Maybe we could put it on the back of the tag with the Christmas greeting…or would that be too proud to assume that others would like it as much as we do??? :P

Thank you for this recipe… I recently found your blog (about a month ago) and I really enjoy it and relate to the military life. My three year old WILL under no circumstances drink plain milk this will save money for sure. I usually buy the big powder mix and it is almost 8 dollars! Yikes … I just made up a batch of this syrup it is still hot but I took a taste! It is good! Not to mention I have the ingrediants on hand at all times anyway.

Lol! So glad your husband filled your sons longing in his healthy shake!

We’re just about out of the store bought kind so this was perfect timing. :)
