Since 2004 we have lived in six different houses. Usually upon moving into our next home my goal is to get everything out of boxes and put away as soon as possible. This means our stuff doesn’t always get put in the best place, and because we have moved so frequently I rarely have time to create a system that works for me.
We have been in our current house for almost eight months. A little after the first month I realized that my kitchen arrangement was not working. But, because I am always in move mode I neglected doing anything about it. In January my goal was to tackle the kitchen.
My biggest pet peeve about the kitchen was that when you opened the dishwasher you couldn’t access two drawers and two cabinets. Those areas contained tupperware and cooking utensils. After dinner I would load the dishwasher and have to continually shut the dishwasher so someone else could get tupperware to store leftovers.
The items I kept in these drawers were ones that frequently were washed in the dishwasher. We switched the contents of these drawers with the ones on the other side of the oven.
We also vacuumed out the drawers. Yuck!
My helpers moved the containers for me.
I have a container that sits next to my stove. At one point it held items that I used while cooking so they were easily accessible. Over time this container because a catch-all. We dumped it out and filled it with things I use on a daily basis.
All finished!
I love the new kitchen set up. It makes cooking and clean up much easier. My only regret is that I waited eight months to tackle this project. We finished the job in about a half hour! I have a few more drawers to tackle in the kitchen and then I plan to attack my bedroom in order to make room for the baby.

What happy little helpers you have! I guess it was easy to get done so quick, with so much help!

Looks great!! 😀 It helps so much when the kitchen is organized. I can never keep the utensil drawer straight though. I was thinking of putting maybe a divider in it to help. 😀

Why did you move so much? I am the same way. My kitchen needs to be organized or I go crazy. If you know where things are it runs smoothly.

I keep telling myself that I don’t need my kitchen organized so that makes sense because we are going to be redoing it. Probably when the boys are older & won’t wreck it. My youngest is 3 months…so that would mean sometime in 2025 i will get anew kitchen…I think I should follow your lead. 🙂

I have to laugh… I am dealing with the same struggles in our new house. Why do they do that with the doors and dishwasher.. you think that would have been thought about before designing… argh! I am glad you found a solution!
