This seems to be the time of year for baby showers, wedding showers, graduation parties, going away parties and whatever else people celebrate these days. Instead of spending a fortune on a cake from the bakery or spending hours trying to decorate the perfect cake yourself, give yourself a break this year and serve cupcakes.
Cupcakes are inexpensive and easy to decorate. To give your cupcakes a more sophisticated look purchase an inexpensive cupcake stand from JoAnn’s or Michaels. With a coupon one of these stands costs around $10 and you can use it over and over for different celebrations. Also, look for stands at yard sales, I’ve seen them for under $5 still in the box.
If you need a quick tutorial for frosting cupcakes, there are literally hundreds of “how to frost a cupcake” tutorials on You Tube. There is everything from how to frost with a Ziploc bag to how to frost a lady bug design. For lots of cute cupcake ideas and inspiration visit Liz at Hoosier Homemade, who is known around the blog world as The Cupcake Lady.

Cupcakes are so chic right now. It seems like they are more popular than cake. I’ve seen weddings where they had cupcakes instead of a traditional wedding cake so you would be doing the “in” thing right now if you served cupcakes! =D

Instead of buying a cupcake stand, I purchased a small cake stand at Hobby Lobby (I can put 4 cupcakes on it) and a glass dome at the thrift store (the kind from the 70’s cheese trays). Then I start with a flat glass platter, add my regular glass cake plate, and then in the middle of that my small cake plate for cupcakes. We do cupcakes for almost every birthday party – much better portion control and that way I can do multiple flavors of cake.
My boys are all born in July so I can bake a double batch of chocolate and vanilla cupcakes, use what I need now and freeze the rest so I only have to heat up the oven once!

I just made butterfly cupcakes for my baby shower! Everyone loved them and they were so much easier to get rid of then pieces of cake!

I’m always doing cupcakes instead of cakes. I have to do ingredient substitutions because of our food allergies, and trying to make a cake is difficult. They always end up mushy and flat. They cook better when I make them into cupcakes. 🙂

You have indeed hit upon a timely theme for me. We’re doing our younger son’s birthday party in less than a month and I think I will be cupcaking it up! Thanks for the relevant posts.
