I’m pretty darn tired (so forgive my typos- I’ll edit in the morning ;-)). We just got home about thirty minutes ago from working on the house and I wanted to get our progress written down before I forgot.
The most important thing you need to know about past two days is this.
About 8:30pm I realized I hadn’t eaten lunch or dinner, which probably explained my headache and ache-y stomach.
I decided to go pick up a pizza. When I walked into the pizza place I looked down and realized I was still wearing my socks and flip flops.
Here’s the deal. I was wearing my favorite boots (it was 65 today in FL- which is totally boot weather) but when I got to the new house I had to take the boots off because we got our hardwood installed yesterday and weren’t supposed to wear shoes on it.
So- because I can’t stand to not wear shoes I put on my “slippers.” I went out to pick up some dinner, completely forgetting that I still had my flip flops on. It wasn’t until I realized the girl mopping the floor at the pizza place was staring at my feet not because I was wearing totally CUTE shoes, but because I walked out of the house covered in sawdust and wearing flip flops with some stylish black socks.
OH MY WORD!
To make things even better, when I got back in the car I realized I still had a pencil stuck through my messy bun from measuring the trim. I’m sure this town thinks I’m a crazy lady.
Okay- back to the renovation update.
After the floors were finished the kids came over and “played” in the house for the first time. Actually they skated around on the wood floors with their socks, but it was the first time they could actually be in the house without looking out for construction debris.
We even had my brother and his family over last night and had our first fire. It was 55 degrees, which is totally fireplace weather in Florida!
The kids had a great time and I think the house finally felt like a home for them after all these weeks of construction.
The calm didn’t last long as we got back at it today working on all the projects that need to be done before we move in, in ten days!
All of a sudden ten days does not seem long enough at all to get everything done.
So remember my cheap-o renovation I’m working on in the bathrooms? I’ve spray painted the hinges in my bathroom cabinets three different colors! It isn’t going to be cheap if I keep changing my mind!
I found this cool hammered spray paint at Home Depot today and am going to give it a try. Hopefully it will coordinate with the new faucets.
Today we started opening the kitchen cabinets. So far no damage, however I have no idea what kind of microwave cabinet I ordered!
The opening for the microwave is TINY! I have no clue how to get a microwave in that thing at all. I emailed my cabinet guy and asked for help because we were all clueless as to how any microwave could fit into a tiny opening like that.
We brought all the cabinets in from the garage and are getting ready for a big day of kitchen install tomorrow. I’m sure it will be a challenge considering my dad is the only skilled labor we have, although I am getting pretty good at installing trim.
I started installing the trim everywhere that has hardwood floors. This is actually much easier than the bedrooms because there are few corner cuts and more straight runs. I still need to caulk and paint this section in the hall.
The vanity for the 1/2 bath arrived yesterday so I got the trim up and caulked in the bathroom and will paint it tomorrow so they can get the vanity out of the hall.
We kept the entry flooring because it was in good shape and it would have been a complete pain to pull it up. During all the construction it was filthy and also had paint on it.
We got it clean, but now we need to work on getting the rest of the paint off the floor so it doesn’t look awful next to our beautiful new floors.
Aren’t they gorgeous?!?!
My painted mirror project is turning out really well. Here’s a little preview, I can’t wait to show you the finished mirror all cleaned and finished.
I added a piece of quarter round to the girls’ bathroom to deal with the issue in the corner.
It covered most of the damage, but I still need to touch up with paint and scrub the tile.
I did get a few pictures of the floors before we brought all the cabinets in. We still don’t have lights in all the rooms, so the pictures aren’t the best, but hopefully it gives you an idea of what the new floors look like.
Dining room after.

I love the dark wood floors. Gorgeous! We live in a house with dark floors like that. I am eager to see the finished photos. This renovation has been lots of fun to watch. Thanks for all the updates. I love how your kids are right next to you with all the projects. They will have skills many people don’t have. And, as another homeschool mom (who loves books) I LOVE the built-in shelves in your living room.
