Cleaning the Toilet with Scotch-Brite

Can we just be honest for a second? Does anyone really like cleaning the toilet? I do not. Since I have three boys, cleaning toilets is a frequent chore around my house.

This summer I’m working with Scotch-Brite to share with you some of their awesome cleaning products. I figured I would start with my least favorite thing to clean, toilets!

Let’s start with the bowl, because in a house with three boys this is actually the cleanest part of the toilet. I love the Scotch-Brite toilet bowl brush for a few reasons.

First it comes with a holder. Personally, I prefer to have a toilet brush next to every toilet. It makes for easy cleaning and you don’t have to carry a wet and dripping brush that just came out of your toilet through your house. But if you don’t have room for a brush in every bathroom, the holder allows you to carry the brush without dripping toilet water on the floor.

Second it has bristles. Whoever thought you could clean the toilet with a sponge did not live with my family. We need nice bristles that point in all sorts of directions to thoroughly clean around the bowl and under the rim. The Scotch-Brite toilet bowl brush has nice firm bristles that can get to all those hard to reach places.

Do you know how nervous I was taking a picture over the toilet? Seriously, I’ve dropped my phone in the toilet twice in the past 3 years!

Oh, and for those little boys with really bad aim, Scotch-Brite makes a great grout cleaning tool that works great around the base of the toilet!

So here’s a few toilet cleaning tips and a giveaway for you.

Toilet Cleaning Tips

  • Once a day quickly brush the toilet bowl. This should be easy to remember because your brush is right next to the toilet. I know everyone goes in there at least once a day. You don’t even have to use any cleaner. A quick swish with the brush will keep it cleaner longer.
  • Once a day have the people who miss the toilet bowl the most (aka the boys) wipe down the seat. You can have them use a baby wipe, a cleaner wipe, or  a paper towel. But daily wiping makes a huge difference.

How do you keep your toilets clean? Share your tip in the comments and you’ll be entered to win a Scotch-Brite prize pack! Your tips could be featured on the Scotch-Brite webpage!

Giveaway ends June 24, 2013.

  1. I like to use dish soap, were on a well and septic so I cant use a lot of strong chemicals. I also like to use a bristle brush, the sponge is not strong enough.

  2. bristle brush and comet scrub

  3. I can’t remember where (maybe pinterest?) I saw this tip, but make a paste of baking soda and lemon juice and spread it around the base of the toilet, working it into any grooves or gaps. Let it steep for about 10 minutes, then spray it down with vinegar. It will foam and fizzle. When it’s done with it’s volcano thing, wipe it up. This really helps when you have young potty-ers who sometimes miss or overshoot and leave a puddle around the bottom of the facilities (ew!)

  4. The once-daily quick scrub works for me! Doing it daily keeps it looking great all the time.

  5. Patricia says:

I follow flylady,so its a swish and swip everyday. so simple just everyday take quick swipe with the bowl brush and a quick wipe with a wet wipe around the toilet ..then on house cleaning day do a good through clean. the daily upkeep keeps it so its always fairly clean

  6. Remember to wipe the bottom outside of the toilet.
Try using a toothbrush to get the gunk from the grooves. Then put the toothbrush where nobody will use it!

  7. Darlene says:

I use a brush and The Works toilet cleaner. I have hard water and rust stains and it does a good job!

  8. Joanne Chaplin says:

I think the key to keeping a clean toilet is daily brushing and wiping.

  9. Elizabeth says:

I also have 3 boys. This is a never-ending job. I have a container of cleaning wipes in every bathroom to make cleaning easier. They have to wipe the toilet and the floor around the toilet off every other day!

  10. It works best if I brush it out/wipe it down daily. I don’t always achieve this though! I use chemicals once a week or so.

  11. I’m old school and use comet and a rag. Now I really want to try your method. I might even get someone in the house to help do it.

  12. When my 4 boys were all living at home I wiped down the toilet every day. Never thought of using the brush daily too.

  13. Heather R says:

My tip to keeping toilets clean is a every other day scrub with a toiket brush. About once a week(ish) I throw some bleach in the toilet bowl and spray some disinfectant on the toilet. It doesnt take much to keep the toilet clean when it is just my husband and I.

I have found that applying baking soda in, on and around the toilet works well with stains and odor. I simply dump some baking soda in and using a bristled toilet brush, scrub the bowl, usually once or twice a week does it. However, I clean the handle, seat, cover and outside of the bowl everyday or every other day. My daughter and I both have long hair and we also have four dogs so the bowl and tank can get pretty hairy.

  15. I try to clean it weekly. That’s my great tip…I need more advice! haha

  16. I use a brush and comet to scrub and cleaner wipes to wipe.

  17. I pour some toilet cleaner in the toilet b4 I head out for a few hours, toilet bowl gets a bit cleaner and smells nice in bathroom that way.

  18. My toilet does not stay clean. I have 2 little boys. I would love to win this, and I LOVE your idea of giving them a baby wipe to wipe it down each day. That is going on the chore list PRONTO!

  19. i use scrubbing bubbles, it cleans the toilet quite well

I let the cleaning product in the toilet and use the toilet brush inside it and a sponge on the outside of the toilet.
