This week is a depressing week for my garden. Last week we attempted to till the garden. My husband woke up bright and early and rented a tiller from the local garden store. All was going well, until the tiller hit some chicken wire. The tiller broke and the garden was less than one-half of the way tilled. Fortunately, he had purchased renter’s insurance on the tiller so we didn’t have to pay to repair the broken tiller.
The garden was tilled later on in the week, but as first time gardeners we made the huge mistake of tilling before the ground was completely dry. Now, half of the garden is a huge muddy mess. The other part, that had been tilled earlier is also wet, and the rain keeps coming, and coming, and according to the weather forecast will keep on coming for the next week.
I also totaled up the amount we have spent on garden stuff. I about choked when I saw the total. A lot of the money was spent on the tiller fiasco, but I am willing to bet that we will not be saving any money this year by having a garden.
On the bright side, the seedings are doing very well. Many of them are ready to go into the ground once it stops raining. I tried to plant in the rain the other day, but the lightning striking in the distance sent me to the car pretty quickly.

The squash is growing nicely.
The tomatoes are ready to go into the ground.
The seedlings are ready to move out of the living room and into the sunshine.
Hopefully the sun will start shining soon and we can move the plants to their new home.

Everything looks really great! We made a great purchase by getting the tiller attachment for our weed eater. It’s amazing how much of a work horse that little thing is! I planted a few seeds last week and I’m amazed to see sprouts coming up. I can’t believe I didn’t kill them.

We had plans to start a garden this year as well, but with thoughts of moving and being unable to purchase much of anything with no transportation it may not happen this year after-all. I’m excited to live vicariously through your garden instead. I can’t wait to see pictures of plants in the ground.

This is why we do raised beds. They are always ready to plant, no tilling, simply dig under. They are so easy to build and not very expensive, esp if you can get some scrap wood. I think we’re going to make a few more, and I’ll do a tutorial. The most expensive part is filling the bed with great soil.
Be very careful with your baby seedlings and harden them properly before they go in the ground. They really need to be babied.
It’s not going to hurt them to be in containers for a while longer.

It’s not about the money right? It’s about the experience and knowing you are growing healthy food for your family. I know we are going to make lots of mistakes with our garden this first year. I’m just hoping my neighbors will take pity on us and share from their garden when ours turns out to be a complete flop!
We can’t plant anything until June around here or it will freeze. Have you found out when you should plant exactly to be past the freeze date in your area?
