I love JoAnn’s. I am on their mailing list so I receive the 40% off coupons in the mail every few weeks. I also signed up for their teacher discount program, which includes homeschoolers! To be eligible for the discount you must show proof that you are a homeschooler. You can use your state or local homeschool membership card, HSLDA membership card, or any documentation from your county proving your are a homeschooler.
When you sign up for the program you receive a card for 15% off all your purchases (sale and non sale items) for one year. You also receive a one time use coupon for 20% off your total purchase including sale items. I always save my 20% off coupon for a big purchase. Your teacher discount card can be used in the store or online. There is no limit to how many times you use your Teacher Rewards card.
If you can’t wait to hit the stores, shop Joann.com and use the coupon code AE74 and save 40% off one regularly priced item.

Hey,
how do I go about getting a HSLDA card. We start “officially” homeschooling next year when my son starts kindergarten. We live in NJ which is very lax about their standards for homeschooling and every time I call the school district with questions like this I get a bunch of blank looks. It would be nice to have some sort of documentation since a lot of stores offer teacher discounts including homeschooling parents.

Heather, you’re unlikely to get information from the school district about where you can get store discounts for being a homeschooler. You’ll need to ask the stores or fellow homeschoolers for that information. As for HSLDA, go to http://www.hslda.com (or is it org?). It stands for Home School Legal Defense Association, and you need to pay for membership.

Thanks for the info.
I know which stores in my area offer discounts (Borders, Barnes and Nobel, Becker’s, etc.. ) I asked most of the stores in my area. What the school district has been unable to tell me is how to get documentation of this, since all the stores in my area require it.

If you join a local, state, or national homeschooling association you should be able to get a membership card which should be enough “proof” for a discount.

Thanks for posting this. I had the membership discount card last year and never used it!! I need to buy some fabric for baby things (grandbaby) and I want to see if I can sign up again since it has expired.

I used to work for HSLDA and it’s http://www.hslda.org. You have to go through an application process to join, but there are a lot of benefits with membership.
1) you get the full legal protection as described on the site (that’s the main reason for membership)
2) you get discounts at places as described here: http://www.hslda.org/perx/default.asp
3) you get HSLDA’s resources. They hire a special needs coordinators, legal assistants, and high school education coordinators
4) you get to participate in their online curriculum market (like ebay, but ebay prohibits certain items to prevent cheating)
5) and yes, you get a membership card that would work for Joanna’s. I know other stores have a similar program (like Borders, Books a Million, craft stores). It doesn’t hurt to ask!
6) Also, and this was my job, they have contests (writing, art, photography) for children with money prizes.
Anyway, sorry if I sound like I’m selling something, because I’m not. Just an FYI!

Forgot to say: a lot of local homeschool groups give you a discount to join HLSDA is you’re a member with them. It’s worth checking out!

YES!!! I just noticed a new Jo-Ann’s on Int’l Speedway a few weeks ago. I rarely get down to Daytona, but when I saw that store I was super excited.

Thanks for the info! I have a few friends across the U.S. that homeschool, so I posted about this on my blog! Always helps to have an extra discount if you can get it!

Not completely relevant however, I had to tell you that I am not only amazed at the amount of children you have but the fact that you home school them. Teachers and stay at home mom;s, especially those who home school are my hero’s. I have one child and lose my patience just trying to help him with his homework. Poor kid. I am getting better and know my limitations patience wise but WOW! You go girl. Those are some lucky children to have such a special Mom.
TootieLizardTush says
Christina,
That is because you are trying to get him to do homework he isn’t interested in which teachers openly refer to as “busy work.” It’s not particularly assigned for the purpose of actually teaching anything. It’s because the public school system as a whole believes children need to be occupied at home. If you were homeschooling him you would be teaching him things he is actually interested in and then patience isn’t required by either party:)

Thanks! I do love “teaching” him when he has not idea or it’s random and not even planned.
Take care
