When was the last time you cleaned your air conditioner registers?
Do they look like mine?
Keeping your air conditioner registers clean and free of dust and debris an easy way to save a little on your electric bills.
Registers are easy to clean, just unscrew them and vacuum them with your vacuum attachment. If they are really dirty you can soak them in a water and bleach mixture to get them clean.
Most of the time just vacuuming them will get them clean and operating at optimal savings.

Another way we’ve really scaled back our bill is unplugging all of our appliances when not in use … washer, dryer, toaster oven, TVs, etc. Saved us over $20 in one month!

We moved in to our new rental house a few months ago and one of the first things we had to do was vacuum the return and replace the filter. It looked so gross, I’m pretty sure the people who lived here before us never cleaned it or replaced the filter. It’s supposed to be white and it was greenish/black. Yuck.

My friend owns a air conditioning company in Florida and shared this tip with me – Don’t buy pleated 3 month filters, they do catch dust but they restrict your airflow tremendously and puts system under a lot of strain…..buy the cheap filters and change every 30 days.
So now you know. Also make sure you get your system checked at least once a year!

I also found out (with a repair bill and a wet basement) that you are supposed to put bleach down the A/C drain tube once a month. Save yourself 200 dollars and do the maintenance! Our heater/a/c guy said about 1/2 cup once a month.
