by

The following is a post from contributing writer Jacinda.

DIY Flower Pens | The Happy Housewife

Part functional, part floral, these pen plants are a beautiful way to write a message. Creatively displayed in a flower pot or watering can, these year-long blooms make the perfect Mother’s Day, anniversary, or birthday gift.

All you need is $5.00, half an hour, and a few materials. No green thumb required!

Supplies Needed

  • 9 ball point pens
  • floral tape
  • 9 silk flower blooms
  • flower pot (or other container in which to display your bouquet)
  • pebbles, marbles, or dried beans
  • wire cutter
  • painter’s  tape (or duct tape)

Instructions

  1. Using a wire cutter, clip the stem of a silk flower 1″ below the bloom. Curl the wire from the stem to fit around the pen.
  2. Hole the stem in place with a 2″ piece of painter’s tape.
  3. Starting at the base, wrap the floral tape around the pen until you reach the bloom and come back down again. Tear the tape at the bottom of the pen.
  4. Repeat with the rest of the pens.
  5. When finished, insert them into a flower pot (or other creative container) filled with small stones, dried beans, or marbles.

I love this, Jacinda! We have a monthly homeschool mom’s meeting and they have these out for us each time. I think I’ll make some to brighten up my home :-). My son said he didn’t want to make them (though he’s been asking to make and sell pen / pencil related things) b/c they were for girls :-).

i did the same thing, but instead of using green tape (i didn’t have any at the time)..i used big leaves and a hot glue gun (low temp). i also put sparkle paint on the flowers and it turned out sooooooooooo pretty! thanks for great idea, my granddaughters teacher is gonna LOVE it! This is such a cute idea. I think it would also make a great gift for a child’s teacher or another professional that is in your life. What a sweet thing to make! – Nicole @ Working Kansas Homemaker

These are great for parties, showers, or just as decoration on your desk or table. Several businesses use these to decorate at registers. Something I have found with the tape though is that it can become very sticky. The kind without tape will last longer and not leave residue on your hands.

I make flower pens all the time – Especially for holidays, but I always have a problems with the floral tape. Floral tape is sticky, on both sides. I wind up rubbing baby powered on the finished product to reduce some of the stickiness but I’ve come to realize that if you use the pen for awhile, the heat from your hands makes it sticky again. Do you have any tips to resolve this?
