Easy Mounting Tip for Hooks

by Toni Herrbach

In most of my homes storage space is limited and I need to go vertical in order to save space. Hooks and hangers are a great way to keep track of brooms, dust pans, mops, umbrellas, as well as bike helmets, skateboards and other outdoor items kids like to leave around the garage.

The problem with mounting hooks or hangers to the wall is that if the item is removed frequently the hook will eventually loosen and fall out, even if it is anchored into a wall. This leaves big holes that need to be patched and the hook needs to be remounted, sometimes several times. In the past I’ve often tried to drill into the wall studs, but there are only so many studs in a wall, and who wants bicycle helmets mounted 18 inches apart in the garage?

This neat little tip from my dad solved all my mounting troubles!

Mount a long piece of wood to the wall. (Make sure it is mounted into the studs) I used a 1 x 6 because there was a piece of it already in the garage when we moved in.

Then mount the hangers and hooks into the wood. You don’t need to worry about anchors or finding studs and it is easy to mount. No hitting sheetrock or the side of a stud when you are trying to mount the hooks!

This tip would also work great in a pantry or coat closet, just use a smaller piece of wood.

Great tip! This also leaves you with only the holes from mounting the wood instead of 20 different holes from hooks!
