I am always looking for new and inexpensive ways to entertain my toddler. Especially since the dog days of summer are among us, and sometimes it’s too hot to go outside during the afternoon. Creating new activities for him with items we already have around the house is always fun, especially when it keeps him busy for a while!
I came up with the idea of making large blocks out of cereal boxes. My son loves to stack things and likes to knock things over even more! For a few weeks, I saved all of our cereal boxes and made my toddler his very own block set.
This is a great upcycle project. When he is tired of playing with them, they can simply be recycled.
How to Make Cereal Box Building Blocks
Supplies Needed
- Cereal Boxes
- Packing or Duct tape
- Craft paper or brown paper bags
Instructions
1. Tape the ends of each cereal box. Taping the ends of each box will help the stability of these blocks
2. Wrap each cereal box with craft paper. Covering the cereal boxes will make your DIY blocks look more like a set of blocks and not just cereal boxes. In my house, it was necessary to cover the cereal boxes. My one year old kept asking for a snack when he saw the cereal boxes instead of stacking them!
3. Color your new blocks (optional). Older kids may want to color their blocks. They might have something in mind that they want to build. These cereal boxes can always be re-wrapped.
4. Play with them!
These blocks can provide hours of entertainment on a rainy or super hot summer day! This is also a fun craft for an older child to help with.

This is a great idea. If your kids are too young for mass coloring or get bored with it after a block or two, you could always use more colorful paper than paper bags (old wrapping paper, comics, etc).
