Take Care of It Today

Many of the organizing tips deal with stuff already in our home, but what about the items we bring into our home?

Instead of stacking it in a pile to deal with later, deal with it now.

I shared a few years ago that I sort my mail over the recycle bin or the paper shredded. I use to let mail pile up until I had time to read through it. I realized that this system was wasting a lot of time because I would move the pile, the pile would be knocked over, or a child would borrow a piece of mail from the pile.

Now I don’t go out to our mailbox until I have the two to three minutes it takes to look through the mail. Most mail is immediately thrown away and bills and important papers are place in my file bag for later in the week.

I learned in a time management class that if you don’t deal with an item the first time you touch it you touch it on average 40 more times before you take care of it!

Save time by taking care of items right away instead of putting them off for another day. 🙂

Many of you have asked how you can participate. You can submit your tip below or if you need tips you can subscribe to my FREE daily email list and have it delivered to your inbox every day!

I live by this rule, taught to me many years ago by a great speaker on the topic of time management, Sherri Tilley: Touch a piece of mail once and only once! It really works!

GREAT advice. Sometimes for me, easier said than done, but sound advice nonetheless. Paper clutter, and counter messes are our biggest hurdle. I love my husband to death, but he is not a neat person. So, I typically am fighting an uphill battle, especially with three rugrats to take care of in addition! :))

Nice this to know. That is why I can’t use my preparation cart in my kitchen. Time to clean it off and deal with this pile once and for all!

Ditto for email. If I don’t have time to deal with it, I don’t open it.
