Spring Cleaning: Organized in 365

by Toni Herrbach

It’s March which means many of us start our spring cleaning routine. In Florida that means cranking up the air conditioner to clean the oven, but that’s not my point.

I’ve talked in previous Organized in 365 posts about using fifteen minute increments to get things done. I cannot tell you how effective this is over time.

Spending fifteen minutes a day on a project will eventually lead to a completed project. It might not be finished in a day or even a week, but it will get done if you slowly chip away at the project, fifteen minutes at a time.

In March, I’m committing to spending fifteen minutes a day on an organizing project. I don’t have time this month to dedicate an entire week or day to spring clean my house, but I can squeeze in fifteen minutes.

Today I tackled my closet.

Please excuse the crummy iphone photo.

It is large and almost always a mess. Since no one ever sees it, it is not a priority. But my messy closet it costing me money.

I’ve lost soccer uniforms, clothing, shoes, and other items because they’ve been buried in my messy closet. That changed today!

In fifteen minutes I found all the soccer jerseys, clothing and a few other items I didn’t even know I was missing. I also got rid of a bunch of clothes I never wore or didn’t fit.

Finding the jersey’s saved me $40!

Fifteen minutes of work for $40?

That’s an hourly savings of $160!

Would you get organized for $160 an hour?

My closet isn’t finished, but in another fifteen minutes it probably will be. I’ll let you know tomorrow!

This is also a great motivator. On days when “I don’t wanna”, I tell myself just do 15 minutes then you can be done. Often, I will work right thru the 15 and a couple hours later, not only have I accomplished something, I also feel better about myself, having not wasted another day.

Awesome! I just found my son’s ipod warranty card I lost when I tackled my kitchen paper file. About 4 inches of papers into the recycle bin. My 15 minute timer went off, and I worked for another 15. Then got the top of my microwave, stair rail, and top of my fridge because I was on a roll. Feels SO much better.
