Practice Math in the Bath

by Toni Herrbach

The following post is from contributing writer Kristen.

Do you have a child that spends a long time in the bath tub?  Why not have your little one spend their excess bathing time practicing their math problems!

Did you know that you can easily make homemade bath toys with craft foam?  Its easy and inexpensive. When craft foam gets wet it will stick to your bathroom and shower walls.  You can create any kind of craft foam bath toy you can think of.  I am going to show you how to make math bath toys. What better place to practice your math, then in the bath?

How to Make Foam Numbers

Supplies Needed

  • Craft foam
  • Scissors
  • Stencils ( Optional)
  • Bathtub or shower

Instructions

1.  Draw out your desired designs onto craft foam.  One thing that is nice about craft foam is that you can use a pen that no longer works and just indent your design into the craft foam.

2. Cut out your numbers and math symbols.  You may want to make a few extra if you are planning on more complicated math.

3. Head to the bath or shower! Make sure to get your numbers wet so they will stick to the bathtub or shower wall. You don’t want to get them too wet or they might slide down!

You can practice all types of math problems, not just your basic addition or subtraction.  Simply create more numbers and symbols as needed.  If your little one is a little more advanced, you can also make multiplication and division signs, decimal points and lines for fractions.

If these math craft foam bath toys are a success with your children, You can also try practicing spelling, geography, or vocabulary. The possibilities are endless! The best part about these bath toys, is that they are very inexpensive!
