This is such a cute idea for a DIY child’s placemat. I think it would be especially fun for a themed birthday party. If you had a Madeline party you could use the pages from the Madeline, if it was a Super Hero party you could use pages from a comic book.
The possibilities are endless.
There are no directions on the Real Simple website, but it looks like the pages from the book covered in contact paper. Super easy!

Sweet idea!!! I am totally doing this. We have countless books that have been repaired numerous times. This is an excellent use for the ones beyond repair.
