Prepping for Orange Peel: Day 23

by Toni Herrbach

Our new handyman is doing a great job. Today my oldest daughter and I went over to the house to tape off doors, windows, and ceilings to protect them from the orange peel overspray.

This included the dining room, hall, entry, two bedrooms, and one bathroom. We almost got the entire thing finished. I’m headed back in the morning to get it finished up.

Our guy gave us this paper and tape dispenser that was supposed to make the job easier. I’m either super uncoordinated or the dispenser doesn’t really work. I’ll see if I can snap a photo tomorrow so y’all will know what not to spend money on when doing this job. 🙂

We found it quicker to hang a strip of paper on a door then add the long strip of tape.

It made the job go much quicker. In fact the longer we worked the more “tricks” we learned to go faster. By the final room we were going about twice as fast as we were when we started.

The good news is that all our taping today saved us another day with the handyman. He should be finished by Friday instead of Sunday as originally planned.

Some of the rooms have these old style lights in the ceiling. They have what I like to call a “distinct 70’s vibe” about them. I’d like to replace them, but we’ll see how much some of the other projects ends up costing us first.

Possible LED recessed retrofit downlight replacement, they are $20+ each so I’m not sure how many we will replace. I’m actually not even sure how many we have in the house. I’ll need to count them tomorrow.

LED lights

One thing we’ve decided to replace are the receptacles. They are all original and many of them have come loose or don’t keep a plug securely plugged in. They are also beige and I’d like them to be white. Receptacles are about $2 each and the plates are $0.50 each. I don’t even want to add up how  much that would be for the whole house.

I think we will do the main areas first and then do the bedrooms later.

I did find this super cool USB receptacle, but they are about $20 each. At the rate my kids “borrow” my iphone plug it might be worth it to put a few in my bedroom!

Have you seen one before? Would you put one in your house?

I’m extra tired today. One of our retirement transitions has been me working full-time while dh looks for a job. Working on the house, plus working, plus homeschool is cutting in to my sleep schedule a bit!

Thank goodness it’s only temporary! I’m looking forward to getting back into a routine, although I definitely enjoy the renovation projects!

This is part of our ongoing renovation project for our new home in Florida.  Our goal is to be done by Thanksgiving or else.  Follow the daily accounts of our real life during this DIY renovation process here.

We replaced all of the receptacles, switches and their covers in our house two years ago, the peace of mind it has brought is well worth our expense.

We installed the same USB/socket combo in a quieter corner of my kitchen counter, it has been a real convenience. I highly recommend!

Good to know! I think I will do the USB receptacle in the kitchen and my bedroom.

First, those paper and tape dispensers are a waste of money and time. We wrestled with one of those on our last project and ended up doing just what you did. Two people can zip through that process very quickly without the stupid dispenser. And second, I must change at least one outlet in every room over to those USB outlets! Genius! 🙂 Your house is coming right along. Don’t stress! Very soon you’ll be looking around and see the accomplishments instead of the to-do list. 🙂

I totally agree! The dispensers are ridiculous!
