Sooo sad the link no longer works. I finally have a quiet afternoon to watch and listen. The comments have been interesting to read and give me and idea of the conversation. Definite ideas to talk with Hubby about.

You just gave me a LOT to think about. My parents helped pay for my college and neglected their retirement (my father is a retired Air Force officer, but they didn’t have additional savings). I used my BSW for two years before I quit to stay home with our oldest son. My brothers (who my parents also helped with college) graduated but only one is using his degree. Fast forward ten years and my father is now totally disabled and he, my mother and youngest brother live with my husband and I. If they had secured their own finances first they would not have to live with my family. I don’t mean that in a vindictive way but for the first time I made the connection that a couples first responsibility is to save for their own retirement. It is not cruel or selfish but really a way of protecting your family in the long run. My husband and I are going to have to talk about this idea….. Thank you for posting this!!

I’m paying for my own college right now. This year, my mom is paying most of my rent. Next year (my junior year) I’ll be 100% on my own. It’s very hard because I can’t work as much as I want to with school. On the other hand, I know the value of money like a lot of my peers don’t. It’s a double-edged sword either way but I’d still go with letting them be on their own as much as possible. I’ve had to pay for a lot of my own things since high school and I’m so glad m parents did that. I appreciate what I earn that much more!

    Neat! Thanks for sharing! 🙂

I don’t know that I’m with Clark on the whole saving every bit for retirement thing. However, I definitely have not seen good fruit from those who have paid for their kids entire education, so I totally agree with you that they need to have some type of responsibility in that area. I’m sure that God will give you all wisdom as you prayerfully consider how much to help each child.

God has blessed you all with such a beautiful family! Thanks for sharing encouraging tidbits and your example with the rest of us! 🙂
