BornFree Bottles Giveaway!

by Toni Herrbach

A few weeks ago I was asked if I wanted to try some BornFree bottles for Cora. I was using Dr. Brown’s bottles because I liked the vacuum tube, which reduces fussiness. When I found out BornFree had a similar system, I decided to take them up on their offer.

BornFree bottles are BPA free, which is very important to me as a mom. If you are not familiar with the issues surrounding BPA in plastics here is an excerpt from a Scientific American podcast.

Why should you care? Well, BPA is a component of the polycarbonate plastic in eyeglass lenses and DVDs among other things.  And high levels of it have been linked to heart disease, diabetes and liver failure in humans, according to the Journal of the American Medical Association.

In fact, the National Toxicology Program warns that BPA may cause babies to develop abnormally. The Canadian government went so far as to ban it in baby bottles as well as listing it as a toxic substance. But the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and the Environmental Protection Agency maintain that BPA is perfectly safe.

Congress, for its part, is considering banning the substance in some products. In the meantime, note that items made from BPA are typically marked with a number seven. These plastics should never be microwaved or exposed to hot liquids—heat can dissolve BPA into what you’re drinking.   Better safe than sorry.

I fall into the better safe than sorry group and am trying to eliminate BPA plastics in our home. Especially ones that touch our food.

Personally I liked the shape of the BornFree bottles as they are short and fat. This means they are less likely to tip in the fridge and with 16 hands reaching in there on a regular basis, bottles tend to get knocked around. They also fit nicely in my cooler bag, which was a problem with the taller Dr. Brown’s bottles.

The BornFree bottles also have one of those, who knows how it works but it does, valve and vent system to reduce vacuum build up and help reduce fussiness. The nipple on the bottles is more natural (sorry, couldn’t think of any other way to describe it), and seems like it would work well for breastfed babies who take an occasional bottle.

Over all, I really like the BornFree bottles. They are easier to take care of and clean compared to the Dr. Brown’s bottles and are dishwasher safe. Cora seemed to like them too. I wanted to get a picture of her using the new bottles, but then I realized I am the main photographer and feeder, hmmmm.

I realize that BornFree bottles are not the cheapest choice, but it is important for me to buy a bottle that reduces fussiness and is BPA free. Everything BornFree makes is BPA free and this weekend all the products on the website ship for free in celebration of Father’s Day. They sell everything from sippy cups to teethers and even glass bottles!

The generous folks at BornFree have gone a step further and are offering two of my readers BornFree gift packs. Included in this gift pack are four bottles and a sippy cup. Even if you don’t have a baby, this would make an awesome baby shower gift! To enter the giveaway leave a comment. For a second entry tweet about this contest and leave a comment. This contest ends Tuesday June 23rd Cora time.

Hmmm, I will have to try these out! I am almost 9 months pregnant right now. I went with Dr. Brown’s with my son, but hated washing them. I will have to see if I can find these here in the middle of nowhere Texas:)

    Hi,
My baby girl seems to throw up alot! I think these bottles would really help her take in less air which in turn would help her keep milk down. With all the new mom stuff to learn seeing your little baby throw up everything she has just put down is tuff. I’ve tried Avent but the bottles leak every where constantly, and with formula costing $30 a can it seems evil to waste much of it from spillage.

Great web site, has truely helped me out. THank you.

What a great giveaway! Even though I’ve always nursed there is still the need for bottles when the baby goes to a grandparent’s house so we can have a quick date night — okay, so it hardly happens, but I can dream … well, I would dream if I got any sleep.

Wow, there are lot of comments on the giveaway. Made me think twice about saying I could really use those bottles. I have an 8 month old that flat out refuses to take a bottle and would love to try these out. I have tried her brothers sippy cups, Dr.Brown Bottles, etc. Don’t get me wrong I love nursing my sweet girl, but a night out with my husband would be wonderful too. Beyond just winning this giveaway, does anyone have any suggestions on how to get her to maybe start using a bottle? I would appreciate any advice.

It would be nice to try, but at 20 months, she is a little old. Maybe the sippy cups, but she’s even a little advanced for them.

Holly has 2 LOs under 2 and really could use them!

I love BPA bottles. I use one myself (the Camelbak!). I think it’s hard enough to drink water as it is, but if you think that it might have some sort of horrible disease-causing nastiness in it….that makes it even harder! We’re expecting our first baby in September so these bottles sound like a good deal.

I really appreciate your blog, by the way. You write excellently!

We are using Born Free bottles for baby #5, and we’ll be keeping them for a while when he’s done just in case we have another blessing. The venting system is awesome. All of our babies have had problems with reflux, and #5 has been known to barf when drinking from other bottles. However, he barely spits up at all when he’s drinking from a Born Free bottle. We’d love to have more of them.

We are having our baby on the 26th and I’ve been really torn about this issue. BPA free is important to me too. I’ve been contemplating going glass, but these seem to be a much better solution. I’d love to give them a try!

Even though I’m not a wife or a mother, I enjoy reading your blog (found it through my sister in laws) and would love to win this contest for her as she is expecting twin girls in about 6 weeks! 🙂 Our family has a history of gastric issues so the fact that these cut down on fussy babies with tummy issues would be great!

BPA is very scary. My friend was recently at a medical conference where BPA was discussed. Unfortunately, BPA is found everywhere practically…the inside of canned goods, inside soda cans, in anti-bacterial soaps even! The scariest part, for me, is that BPA is found in baby wipes. And, interestingly enough, infertility has greatly risen since BPA has been introduced into our packaging, etc. Here we are wiping our children right where those reproductive organs are. My husband isn’t much into all of this, but as soon as he heard that, he has stopped using wipes and we use wet paper towels now. We won’t fully see the effects of BPA, but our children’s generation will. Long story short…I’m in full support of those bottles and any product that takes the responsiblity to make safe products. It’s worth the extra money in my book.

I discovered “the world of blogs” when I was going through morning sickness 6 months ago. Since then, I have daily enjoyed your posts. I had hoped to meet you at HEAV, but we opted to go to the NC conference instead since HEAV was a little too close to the baby’s due date. We are expecting #8 soon- so I very much relate to what you share about your family & running a home. Still waiting for the next installment of “Our Story”… 🙂

Those do sound like great bottles! My 8-month-old has refused a bottle since he vomited after having one when he was 3 months old, he is very stubborn! We have tried different kinds, maybe this would do the trick. We are also exploring different sippy cups at this point too. I would love to win! Thanks!
