"You know, no one is really happy here with dad gone." I tried really hard to not take it personally. But my son was right. No one is happy with dad gone. Each kid is dealing with it in a different way, and some of them are less happy than others. But there is always an underlying sadness around here. I can't fix it, I can't make it better. I'm at a loss for how to move forward when all ...
Deployment Day #91
Tonight I decided my kids needed to eat more vegetables so I took them to Outback for dinner. I'm joking. Well sort of. We had a gift card so I thought it would be fun to go out in 15 degree weather and get dinner. Can we talk about the weather for a minute. I realize that is all anybody is talking about these days, but WHAT THE HECK?!?!?! I've spent five winters in Maryland, four in Virginia, ...
Deployment Day #90
Guess what today is. Any ideas? Six years ago I sat in front of the computer and typed in different names of websites until I found one I liked and was available. The Happy Housewife was born. Many people have asked how I got into blogging. It's funny because it all started because of a deployment. Eight years ago my husband deployed to Iraq. He was unable to receive emails so I ...
Deployment Day #89

Everyone has socks and underwear and at least one pair of jeans, so it's all good. Big news today... I made dinner. Well, I put a frozen lasagna in the oven, took some old sub rolls out of the freezer and spread butter on them, and opened a bag ...
Deployment Day #87 & 88
I cannot seem to kick this cold. The frustrating thing for me is that I rarely get sick. I'm a pretty healthy person and even when I get sick am able to recover quickly. The biggest problem is I feel worse in the morning and better in the afternoon. Typically I get up pretty early and get a lot done before my kids wake up. Lately that hasn't been happening because I just don't feel well when ...
Deployment Day #86
Today my oldest daughter called me a hermit. She mentioned that she was going to a Thirty-One Gifts party this weekend and wanted to know if I wanted to go with her. I told her that I might go, but it would just depend on what needed to be done around the house, blah, blah, blah. She responded with something like- "Mom, you are a hermit, you need to get out of the house!" Here's the ...
