Birdsong is important for birds\u2019 survival.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>It identifies species.<\/li>\n<li>It tells if a bird is male or female.<\/li>\n<li>It scares predators away from egg-filled nests.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Birds sing different songs depending on what they are trying to communicate. Each one tells a different story.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Learning to observe wild birds is part seeing and part hearing. Many species look similar, and some hide out of sight altogether. If you are interested in learning more about the winged creatures that hang out near you, it is important to identify their songs.<\/p>\n<p>There are many CDs and websites that teach listeners about the different sounds birds make. They share examples of these calls so that you can learn to identify the birds in your area. <strong>But one of the best ways to learn to identify different birdsong is to listen to the birds themselves.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Get outside. And then set up this simple activity.<\/p>\n<h2>Identifying Bird Calls Activity<\/h2>\n<h4>Supplies Needed<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>Recorder equipped with microphone (A digital recorder would be a great tool for this activity. You can record, and then upload the sounds to your computer and save them in the .mp3 format.)<\/li>\n<li>Thin rope or string<\/li>\n<li>Bird field guide<\/li>\n<li>Nature journal<\/li>\n<li>Pen or pencil<\/li>\n<li>Watch or timer<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4>Instructions<\/h4>\n<ol>\n<li>Find a quiet place that is visited by a lot of birds.<\/li>\n<li>Using rope or string, tie your recorder onto a pole or tree. Near a feeder or nest would work well.<\/li>\n<li>Turn the recorder on.<\/li>\n<li>Locate an out-of-the-way spot nearby, and sit down with a nature journal.<\/li>\n<li>Close your eyes, be still, and listen.<\/li>\n<li>Record the sounds you hear in your journal. Try to replicate the sounds as closely as you can.
