And while it seems like summer is in full swing, back-to-school is just around the corner. Whether your kids go to public\/private school or you homeschool, the lazy days of summer are likely winding down, or soon will be.<\/p>\n<p><strong>When August hits, we like to gather family and friends for a last summer fun night.<\/strong> The easiest &#8212; and most fun &#8212; family night we have all year is the backyard weenie roast. We light a fire, gather sticks, food, and head out back for some fun.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/thehappyhousewife.com\/homeschool\/how-to-host-a-family-weenie-roast\/weenie-roast-2\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-22735\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-22735 alignnone\" src=\"\/\/thehappyhousewife.com\/homeschool\/files\/2013\/07\/weenie-roast1.jpg\" alt=\"weenie roast\" width=\"500\" height=\"354\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thehappyhousewife.com\/homeschool\/files\/2013\/07\/weenie-roast1.jpg 500w, https:\/\/thehappyhousewife.com\/homeschool\/files\/2013\/07\/weenie-roast1-300x212.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>What&#8217;s best about hosting a weenie roast (or just doing it with your own family) is how little preparation and cleanup there is. This is one gathering that everyone can enjoy.<strong> Mom won&#8217;t be stuck in the kitchen while everyone else is having a blast.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s my no-fail way to get this party fired up.<\/p>\n<h3><strong><span style=\"line-height: 13px;\">Make Your List &amp; Shop<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"line-height: 13px;\">Hot dogs<\/span><\/li>\n<li>Hot dog buns<\/li>\n<li>Condiments<\/li>\n<li>Fruit salad or pasta salad<\/li>\n<li>Chips<\/li>\n<li>Graham crackers<\/li>\n<li>Marshmallows<\/li>\n<li>Chocolate bars<\/li>\n<li>Drinks<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><strong>Afternoon Preparation<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"line-height: 13px;\">Open hot dog packages and put them in a reusable, lidded container.<\/span><\/li>\n<li>Put buns on a tray and cover with plastic wrap.<\/li>\n<li>Put salad in a bowl and cover, placing a serving spoon on top.<\/li>\n<li>Break up chocolate and graham crackers for s&#8217;mores and put them on a platter with marshmallows (ready for little hands to assemble).<\/li>\n<li>Ice the drinks in open buckets for easy grabbing.<\/li>\n<li>Get paper plates, napkins, and a large trash can, and set them up outside.<\/li>\n<li>Collect big sticks and get the fire going.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/thehappyhousewife.com\/homeschool\/how-to-host-a-family-weenie-roast\/weenie-roast-cooking\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-22738\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-22738 alignnone\" src=\"\/\/thehappyhousewife.com\/homeschool\/files\/2013\/07\/weenie-roast-cooking.jpg\" alt=\"weenie roast cooking\" width=\"500\" height=\"459\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thehappyhousewife.com\/homeschool\/files\/2013\/07\/weenie-roast-cooking.jpg 500w, https:\/\/thehappyhousewife.com\/homeschool\/files\/2013\/07\/weenie-roast-cooking-300x275.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Enjoy<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><strong>That&#8217;s it! Now you&#8217;re all set.<\/strong> Let the kids run around the backyard and play or throw a ball with them. When someone&#8217;s hungry, they can grab their own hot dog, spear it with a stick, and roast it over the fire (adult supervision, of course), pop it into a bun, slather it with ketchup and mustard, scoop up some salad, and eat their perfectly prepared dinner.<\/p>\n<p>Afterwards, the kiddos can roast marshmallows for s&#8217;mores, and then toss the paper products in the trash can.<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>Bellies are full and clean up is done.<\/p>\n<p>The kids can keep playing or run around and catch fireflies, and the adults and babies can hang out by the fire chatting until bedtime.<\/p>\n<p>Really, the best family memories are built on simple evenings like this.
