To reward reading or not to reward reading … that<\/em> is the homeschool mom’s question.<\/p>\n

My favorite (public) school teacher was my 3rd grade teacher. \u00a0She read The Chronicles of Narnia<\/em><\/a> series to us the entire year. \u00a0We all gathered on overstuffed pillows at the foot of her rocking chair. \u00a0This teacher also rewarded students at the end-of-the-year with a brown lunch bag full of giant gumballs for each book read.<\/p>\n

I’ve loved reading since 3rd grade. \u00a0Rewarded or not, I couldn’t check out books from the school library fast enough. \u00a0I want my children to have this same appetite for great stories.<\/p>\n

My son was introduced to the\u00a0Pizza Hut Book It Rewards<\/em><\/a>\u00a0(they include homeschoolers). \u00a0It was tons of fun for all of us, but the program only lasts a few months. \u00a0It’s no surprise that his desire to read slowly died when we stopped hitting the library as often for personal pan pizzas.<\/p>\n

I decided to offer our own way to reward reading (unassigned reading from the curriculum).<\/p>\n

For every 5 chapter books completed the boy can spend an hour at the Lego Creation Center (it’s free).<\/p>\n

The most important part of your children’s desire to read falls on the parents.<\/strong> \u00a0While we do reward reading, we also read ourselves!\u00a0If we’re not setting the example, why would our kids want<\/em> to read? \u00a0We can “bribe” them to read but it will never last. \u00a0If we plop down and rely on the television to entertain us (or them), reading will not be of any interest. \u00a0If we only expect our children to read during homeschool time, they’ll turn that off after school. \u00a0If we’re not making books available in the house, they won’t read.<\/p>\n

I had to schedule the library on our calendar to make sure we got there.<\/strong> \u00a0We found an age appropriate series to read together. \u00a0We watched one Harry Potter movie for my son to shout, “Books are so much better!”\u00a0 \u00a0Now my son reads for pleasure in his room or in the car.<\/p>\n

7 Easy Reading Reward Ideas<\/h2>\n
    \n
  1. Time<\/strong> – Spend quality time together. \u00a0Go on a “date” or out for special dessert. \u00a0Just you and the reader.<\/li>\n
  2. Small item<\/strong> – Grab a small Lego kit, book, or art supplies as a reward for a certain number of books completed. (Set the number of books first.)<\/li>\n
  3. Tech time<\/strong> – Offer 30 or 60 minutes of computer,\u00a0Wii, or other electronic time — without siblings.<\/li>\n
  4. No homework<\/strong> – Lighten a Friday of school work, but do not rush to make-up Monday.<\/li>\n
  5. Redbox rental <\/strong>– It’s only $1\u00a0<\/strong>to rent from Redbox. \u00a0Throw in some popcorn for fun.<\/li>\n
  6. Something special<\/strong> – Think of something creative and fun! Let them do school in their pajamas, \u00a0choose their lunch, \u00a0have a play date, eat breakfast for dinner, etc.<\/li>\n
  7. Join a Club<\/strong> – Join an online reading club like The Magic Tree House!<\/a> \u00a0Earn passport stamps and play games as a reward.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    Be sure to keep a record of the books your children read. \u00a0It’s great for your end-of-the-year homeschool portfolio\/evaluation.<\/p>\n
