{"id":20071,"date":"2012-06-05T09:00:43","date_gmt":"2012-06-05T13:00:43","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thehappyhousewife.com\/homeschool\/?p=20071"},"modified":"2012-06-04T10:53:54","modified_gmt":"2012-06-04T14:53:54","slug":"the-child-who-wont-do-his-schoolwork","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thehappyhousewife.com\/homeschool\/the-child-who-wont-do-his-schoolwork\/","title":{"rendered":"The Child Who Won&#8217;t Do His Schoolwork"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>The following is a post from contributing writer Tabitha.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/thehappyhousewife.com\/homeschool\/files\/2012\/05\/student.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-20120\" src=\"\/\/thehappyhousewife.com\/homeschool\/files\/2012\/05\/student.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"336\" height=\"448\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thehappyhousewife.com\/homeschool\/files\/2012\/05\/student.jpg 336w, https:\/\/thehappyhousewife.com\/homeschool\/files\/2012\/05\/student-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 336px) 100vw, 336px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h3>The Problem<\/h3>\n<p>Over the past few months we&#8217;ve had a plain and simple uncooperative child.\u00a0 We&#8217;ve given him opportunities to learn, to do coursework to show he&#8217;s learning, to prove himself academically, and to complete his homeschooling tasks for the school year.<\/p>\n<p>Did he do it?\u00a0 No.\u00a0 Second chances?\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 Did he do it?\u00a0 No.\u00a0 Threats?\u00a0 Sure.\u00a0 Did they work?\u00a0 No.<\/p>\n<p>Between his father threatening to send him to public school and both of us taking away extras until he at least attempted to get with the program and work with us on making sure he&#8217;s done his homeschool learning for the year, nothing worked.\u00a0 We had some major temper tantrums, some serious problem behaviors, and overall, no cooperation on the part of this child.<\/p>\n<h3>Stepping Back<\/h3>\n<p>While his behavior was unacceptable, neither was our response. It made both of us look at the situation again and see what we could do to:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Not completely turn off this son from learning.<\/li>\n<li>Not have him completely give up on his parents as being on his side and in his corner.<\/li>\n<li>Not alienate him from being involved with his family.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>So, I tried to look at the whole situation differently.\u00a0 What was this son doing with his time?\u00a0 We corrected the problems with acting out, but after that, I watched.\u00a0 This son takes care of his siblings, and when I say that, I mean he looks out for the youngest of our family.\u00a0 He comforts.\u00a0 He finds what&#8217;s wrong and rights it.\u00a0 He helps with whatever he sees needs doing around the house, including dishes, changing diapers, reading to younger kids.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/thehappyhousewife.com\/homeschool\/files\/2012\/05\/baby-walking.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-20122\" src=\"\/\/thehappyhousewife.com\/homeschool\/files\/2012\/05\/baby-walking.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"327\" height=\"448\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thehappyhousewife.com\/homeschool\/files\/2012\/05\/baby-walking.jpg 327w, https:\/\/thehappyhousewife.com\/homeschool\/files\/2012\/05\/baby-walking-219x300.jpg 219w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 327px) 100vw, 327px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>He reads.\u00a0 He is a fast reader like his parents and goes through every book we have and then reads them again.\u00a0 He spends time outside, getting to know our neighbors, many of them elderly, and finding out if they need anything.\u00a0\u00a0 He is involved with his church duties, and through all this, mostly maintains a positive attitude that makes those around him smile.<\/p>\n<p>Did we object to any of this?\u00a0 No.\u00a0 This is part of who our son is, what makes him tick.\u00a0 What we did object to was the lack of balance between our learning goals for him and his own choices for how he spends his time.<\/p>\n<p>So my challenge lately, since we figured some of this out, has been to include him in his learning and find out how to get him to choose his goals and reach them.\u00a0 How to keep him more balanced in his daily activities.\u00a0 How to keep him focused on his future and not what he wants to do right now.<\/p>\n<h3>What We Have Learned<\/h3>\n<ol>\n<li>Make sure your child is getting your time and your attention.\u00a0 Know who your child is.<\/li>\n<li>Look for the positive in what they ARE doing, and not for the negative or what they are NOT doing.<\/li>\n<li>Involve them in their goal setting, especially in the teen years.\u00a0 Where do they want to go?<\/li>\n<li>Ease up&#8230; one style of learning doesn&#8217;t always work for the next child.\u00a0 Learning isn&#8217;t one size fits all.<\/li>\n<li>Take a HUGE deep breath and take each day as a new opportunity to reach this child that has been trusted to your care.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/thehappyhousewife.com\/homeschool\/author\/tabitha\/\">More posts from Tabitha<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a target = \"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/office.microsoft.com\" target=\"_blank\">Photo Credit<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The following is a post from contributing writer Tabitha.
