This Mother\u2019s Day salt dough ornament\/plaque is perfect for kiddos big and small to show mom they care.<strong><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>We use <a href=\"http:\/\/thehappyhousewife.com\/home-management\/salt-dough-ornaments\/\" target=\"_blank\">this salt dough recipe<\/a>. It\u2019s easy to create with only flour, salt, and water. Half of that recipe was plenty for us to make four of these ornaments.<\/p>\n<h3>Supplies Needed<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>1\/2 of a the <a href=\"http:\/\/thehappyhousewife.com\/home-management\/salt-dough-ornaments\/\" target=\"_blank\">salt dough recipe<\/a><\/li>\n<li>rolling pin<\/li>\n<li>non-stick baking mat<\/li>\n<li><a title=\"affiliate link\" href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Wilton-Comfort-Grip-Heart-Cutter\/dp\/B00004S7YZ\/ref=pd_sim_hg_2?ie=UTF8&amp;refRID=0XVPAENTQ6TVRPR3VH71&amp;tag=thehaphou-20\" target=\"_blank\">large heart shaped cookie cutter<\/a><\/li>\n<li>straw<\/li>\n<li>cookie sheet<\/li>\n<li>acrylic paint (we used <a title=\"affiliate link\" href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/DecoArt-Americana-Acrylic-2-Ounce-Turquoise\/dp\/B001B2QWR6\/ref=sr_1_1?s=home-garden&amp;ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1429661074&amp;sr=1-1&amp;keywords=americana+acrylic+desert+turquoise&amp;tag=thehaphou-20\" target=\"_blank\">DecoArt Americana<\/a> in Desert Turquoise, Black, and White)<\/li>\n<li>brushes<\/li>\n<li>24 inches oribbon<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Instructions<\/h3>\n<p><strong>1. Prepare the salt dough as directed.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>2. Roll.<\/strong> On the non-stick baking mat, use your rolling pin to roll out the dough to 1\/4-inch thickness.<\/p>\n<p><strong>3. Cut out hearts<\/strong> with the cookie cutter, and remove extra dough from around them so the hearts don\u2019t get moved at all.<\/p>\n<p><strong>4. Cut holes. <\/strong>Use the straw to cut out ribbon holes in the top corners of the dough. We found it best to get about 1\/4 inch away from the heart&#8217;s edge. If you cut the hole any closer, the dough on the top edge could be too flimsy to hold the weight of the plaque.<\/p>\n<p><strong>5. Press.\u00a0<\/strong>With clean hands, press a palm or set of fingerprints into the dough to form a solid impression. When helping a child do this, I hold their wrist in place with one hand so they don\u2019t wiggle. Then I gently press each finger solidly to form a nice impression without making the dough too thin.<\/p>\n<p><strong>6. Bake.<\/strong> Carefully move the baking mat and dough to a cookie sheet. Bake at 200 degrees for 4 &#8211; 6 hours until they are completely dry. After they\u2019re finished baking, remove from the oven and let them cool completely before painting.<\/p>\n<p><strong>7. Paint.<\/strong> Using your favorite color of acrylic paint, cover the top and sides of the plaque completely.\u00a0I use the same non-stick mat to paint on because it\u2019s super easy to clean.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-30039 size-full\" title=\"Mother's Day Salt Dough Ornaments (painting) at The Happy Housewife\" src=\"\/\/thehappyhousewife.com\/home-management\/files\/2015\/04\/mothers-day-salt-dough-plaque-1.jpg\" alt=\"Mother's Day Salt Dough Ornaments (painting) at The Happy Housewife\" width=\"500\" height=\"333\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thehappyhousewife.com\/home-management\/files\/2015\/04\/mothers-day-salt-dough-plaque-1.jpg 500w, https:\/\/thehappyhousewife.com\/home-management\/files\/2015\/04\/mothers-day-salt-dough-plaque-1-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Now mix a very little bit of the white with your favorite color. Use this to <strong>highlight the upward edges<\/strong> of each impression.<\/p>\n<p>Mix a tiny dot of black paint with your favorite color and <strong>apply to the very middle part of the handprint<\/strong>. Now <strong>firmly press the child&#8217;s clean fingers onto the print<\/strong> to accentuate the ridges and valleys of the little ones handprint. Label.<\/strong> Use paint or a sharpie to write the child&#8217;s\u00a0name, age, and the date on the back of the plaque to commemorate the event. Allow the paint to dry completely before going to the next step.<\/p>\n<p><strong>9.
