This is very exciting news for them but possibly worrisome for some parents. The thrill of no school lasts for about 2 weeks before the kids start complaining that they are bored. So this summer try these 5 ways to keep them busy and happy.

1. Play Dates

Find a classmate or neighborhood friend that is your child’s age and schedule a weekly play date. Work with the child’s parents on switching off on activities, play date locations and who will be supervising. Keeping a weekly date planned will give your child something to look forward too!

2. Summer Camp

Depending on your budget and your child’s age you may want to consider sending your child to overnight camp. There are plenty of different overnight camps based on activities or hobbies that your child loves. There are religious based camps, space camps, art camps you can check out. If you don’t feel that your child is ready for overnight camps consider day camps that are centered on sports or music.

3. Relatives

Does your child have a grandparent or favorite aunt that they love to visit? If you are a working parent this is a great way to get them out of the house for a bit. Talk to your relative about setting up some sort of compensation for your child to visit. Make it a week long vacation; it’s like camp but without the cost and its perfect time for bonding.

4. Projects

Start to gather ideas about large projects that your child may want to work on. Think about perhaps building a tree house or fort for the backyard. The key is to find a project that they love and that will last them all summer to work on. Or get them a cheap camera and they can start a ‘nature journal’ with photos and clippings of things they found during the summer.

You could also create a “Mom, I’m Bored” Activity Jar (with printable activity cards) as shared here at The Happy Housewife.

5. Lessons

Summer is the perfect time for your child to start some sort of lessons. Notice that your child loves music? Look weekly music lessons for them to try out. There are painting and drawing courses for the artists in your family. Want to do something that will help them school? Look at local tutors for math, science or English lessons.

Summer doesn’t have to be boring! Get your kids active and consider these five ideas for this summer. Remember to have fun and enjoy the time with them at home, they grow up faster than we are prepared for!

Kelsey is the editor in chief for findananny.
