them. \u00a0If I want holes in blue jeans all I need to do is let my boys wear them for a few days. \u00a0<strong>They are always ripping their jeans and putting holes in the knee.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>One way to fix holes in blue jeans is to cut them off above the knee and turn them into shorts. \u00a0However, a child can only have so many pairs of jean shorts.<\/p>\n<p>During the winter, a closet full of jean shorts doesn&#8217;t work!\u00a0 What&#8217;s a mom to do?<\/p>\n<p>The good news is that ripped jeans can be fixed with patches or simple thinking, &#8220;I don&#8217;t know how to sew,&#8221; keep reading. You don&#8217;t have to sew to repair jeans.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Repair_Rips_in_Jeans_with_No-Sew_Iron_on_Patches\"><\/span>Repair Rips in Jeans with No-Sew Iron on Patches<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><strong>1. \u00a0Iron-On Patches<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>You can easily purchase <a target = \"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/s\/?_encoding=UTF8&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=390957&amp;field-keywords=Fabri-Tac&amp;linkCode=ur2&amp;tag=thehaphou-20&amp;url=search-alias%3Daps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">iron-on patches for blue jeans<\/a> which can be cut to size. However, you can also make your own.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/thehappyhousewife.com\/home-management\/files\/2012\/01\/iron-on-patch.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-20209 your hole. \u00a0Cut a piece of blue jean fabric that is at least 1\/2 inch larger than the hole.<\/strong> \u00a0<em>(Old blue jeans that are beyond repair are an excellent source of patch fabric.) <\/em>For example, this hole was less than 1 inch square\u00a0so I made the patch 1 1\/2 inches square.<\/p>\n<p><strong>b. \u00a0Cut a piece of Heat n Bond that is just slightly larger than the patch.<\/strong> \u00a0Use <a target = \"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/s\/?_encoding=UTF8&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=390957&amp;field-keywords=Fabri-Tac&amp;linkCode=ur2&amp;tag=thehaphou-20&amp;url=search-alias%3Daps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Heat n Bond Ultrahold<\/a> <em>(Available at Amazon or craft stores.)<\/em> for this project as it is heavy duty and requires no sewing.<\/p>\n<p><strong>c. \u00a0Iron the Heat n Bond to the patch for 2 seconds.<\/strong>\u00a0Once cool, pull away the paper backing and trim any excess Heat n Bond.<\/p>\n<p><em>Please note that if you use an iron-on patch you may find that the corners may peel with repeated use or washing. \u00a0Therefore, I recommend this method on small holes only. \u00a0Optionally,\u00a0<\/em><em>you can hand sew the patch on before ironing it to the jeans. \u00a0Just pin the patch over the hole, then use a needle and thread to stitch it down, and then follow the next step. \u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Place the patch over the hole, right side up, and iron for 4-6 seconds.<\/strong> \u00a0Allow to cool and then test to be sure the patch adhered to the jeans.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Fix_small_tears_by_hand_sewing_the_jeans\"><\/span>Fix small tears by hand sewing the jeans.<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"2_Hand_Sewing\"><\/span><strong>2. \u00a0<strong>Hand Sewing<\/strong><\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Hand sewing a hole or rip in a pair of jeans is something\u00a0I recommend only if the tear isn&#8217;t very wide. \u00a0The use of a blind stitch makes the hole disappear and the stitches &#8220;invisible&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/thehappyhousewife.com\/home-management\/files\/2012\/01\/Hand-sewin-holes-1.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-20200 aligncenter\" away some of the threads around the hole.<\/strong> \u00a0Don&#8217;t cut the actual fabric, just the frayed parts.<\/p>\n<p><strong>b.\u00a0The stitch needed to sew an invisible seam is a vertical blind stitch. <\/strong>\u00a0Start 1\/2 inch from the right edge of the hole and insert your needle from the inside of the jeans up through the top.<\/p>\n<p><strong>c. \u00a0You will make stitches that are vertical and that go across the hole from top to bottom.<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0Make several small stitches and gradually make them bigger until they are the height of the hole. \u00a0After a few stitches pull the thread taught and your stitches will become invisible.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Once you pass the hole go past it to the left 1\/2 inch, gradually making your stitches smaller.<\/strong> \u00a0Remember to pull the thread in order to make your stitches invisible. \u00a0Tie off your thread and cut close to the jeans.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"If_you_have_a_sewing_machine_you_can_sew_on_a_patch\"><\/span>If you have a sewing machine you can sew on a patch.<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"3_Sewing_Patches_2_Methods\"><\/span><strong>3. \u00a0Sewing Patches (2 Methods)<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><strong>Method 1:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This method of sewing on a patch requires the fabric to be folded under and stitched on using a\u00a0straight stitch\u00a0on a sewing machine.<\/p>\n<p><a of blue jean fabric <\/strong><em>(or fabric of your choice)<\/em><strong> larger than the hole.<\/strong> \u00a0<strong>Iron the edges to the wrong side 1\/4 inch all around.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>b. \u00a0Using a seam ripper, <strong>open the INNER seam of the jeans approximately 4 inches above and below the hole.<\/strong> \u00a0This will be much easier than trying to sew the patch on with the jeans as is. \u00a0<strong>Pin the patch in place.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>c. \u00a0Using a straight stitch, sew the patch to the jeans using a 1\/8 inch seam allowance.<\/strong>\u00a0 Take care to keep the jeans out of the way underneath where you are stitching. Backstitch at the end. \u00a0<strong>Stitch the side of the jeans back together <\/strong><em>(Turn the jeans inside out first.)<strong>.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Method 2:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This method of sewing on a <a target = \"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/s\/?_encoding=UTF8&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=390957&amp;field-keywords=Fabri-Tac&amp;linkCode=ur2&amp;tag=thehaphou-20&amp;url=search-alias%3Daps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">patch<\/a> uses a satin stitch on a sewing machine.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-20219 aligncenter\" src=\"\/\/thehappyhousewife.com\/home-management\/files\/2012\/02\/Sewing-patches-method-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"540\" height=\"540\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thehappyhousewife.com\/home-management\/files\/2012\/02\/Sewing-patches-method-2.jpg 540w, https:\/\/thehappyhousewife.com\/home-management\/files\/2012\/02\/Sewing-patches-method-2-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/thehappyhousewife.com\/home-management\/files\/2012\/02\/Sewing-patches-method-2-300x300.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 540px) 100vw, 540px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>a.<\/strong> \u00a0<strong>Cut a piece of blue jean fabric <\/strong><em>(or fabric of your choice)<\/em><strong> larger than the hole<\/strong><em> (The <a target = \"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/s\/?_encoding=UTF8&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=390957&amp;field-keywords=Fabri-Tac&amp;linkCode=ur2&amp;tag=thehaphou-20&amp;url=search-alias%3Daps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">patches<\/a> pictured above were 3 inches by 3 3\/4 inches)<\/em>. \u00a0<strong>Round off the corners with a pair of scissors.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>b. \u00a0Using a seam ripper,\u00a0<strong>open the INNER seam of the jeans approximately 4 inches above and below the hole.<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong>This will be much easier than trying to sew the patch on with the jeans as is.<strong> \u00a0Pin the patch over the hole, centered on the jeans.<\/strong>\u00a0 <em>(I covered both knees so that they would be matching.)<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>c. \u00a0Using a tight satin stitch<\/strong> <em>(Zig-zag stitch set to a wide width and a narrow length),<\/em> <strong>sew around the entire patch.<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0Backstitch at the end. \u00a0<strong>Stitch the side of the jeans back together <\/strong><em>(Turn the jeans inside out first.)<\/em><strong>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Side note:<\/strong> \u00a0Use a sturdy fabric such as corduroy or twill to repair the jeans. \u00a0If you use a decorative cotton fabric be aware that children who make a hole in a pair of blue jeans are likely to make a hole in your decorative patch too. \u00a0\ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Bonus_Idea_Get_Creative\"><\/span><strong>Bonus Idea: \u00a0Get Creative<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>I saw an idea similar to this next one on <a target = \"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/bymiek.blogspot.com\/2010\/10\/dhz-monster-knie.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">this site<\/a>, but I made some changes so a sewing machine isn&#8217;t necessary.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/thehappyhousewife.com\/home-management\/files\/2012\/02\/Monster-Patch.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-20224 aligncenter\" src=\"\/\/thehappyhousewife.com\/home-management\/files\/2012\/02\/Monster-Patch.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"540\" height=\"540\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thehappyhousewife.com\/home-management\/files\/2012\/02\/Monster-Patch.jpg 540w, https:\/\/thehappyhousewife.com\/home-management\/files\/2012\/02\/Monster-Patch-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/thehappyhousewife.com\/home-management\/files\/2012\/02\/Monster-Patch-300x300.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 540px) 100vw, 540px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>a. Remove any stray threads away from the hole <\/strong>and use <a target = \"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/2NgHC2z\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Fray Check<\/a> to seal the edges.\u00a0<strong>Cut a piece of red felt or fleece that is slightly larger than the hole <\/strong>(mouth)<strong>. <\/strong><strong>Cut a piece of white felt or fleece <\/strong>that is as wide as the hole and longer (teeth)<strong>. \u00a0<\/strong><strong>Also cut 2 white circles <\/strong>(eyes)<strong>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>Measurements:<\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>Hole-2 inches wide by 3\/4 of an inch high<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Circles-2 at 3\/4 of an inch<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Red Square- 2 1\/2 inches<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>White for Teeth-1 1\/2 inches high by 2 inches wide<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>b.<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>Cut the white piece of felt or fleece <\/strong>to look like teeth and use <a target = \"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/2NXvcBK\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Fabri-Tac<\/a> \u00a0to adhere it to the red square <em>(Do not use Fabri-Tac on the actual pointy parts of the teeth.)<strong>. \u00a0<\/strong><\/em><strong>Use Fabri-Tac to adhere the white circles above the hole and to adhere the &#8220;mouth&#8221; to the inside of the hole. \u00a0<\/strong>Allow the Fabri-Tac to dry.<\/p>\n<p><strong>c. \u00a0<\/strong><strong>Using a needle and embroidery floss, stitch the mouth and eyes in place.<\/strong> \u00a0This will provide extra durability.<\/p>\n<p>If the jeans are beyond repair, you can recycle them and <a target = \"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/thehappyhousewife.com\/home-management\/low-sew-purse\/\">make a jean purse<\/a>.
