There is something about organizing and decluttering that makes me feel super productive. I’ve finished the girls’ room and the clothing swap and am now busy organizing and sorting the clothes. The girls don’t need 25 dresses each, 10 sweaters, and 30 t-shirts. I’m deciding what stays, goes, or is recycled. How is your cleaning coming? Have you tackled any big projects this week?

If you hate to clean, or feel like you don’t know how to clean/organize I have a little treat for you today!

A few weeks ago I received a copy of Home-Ec 101: Skills for Everyday Living – Cook it, Clean it, Fix it, Wash it, written by fellow blogger Heather Solos. I wasn’t sure what to expect, since I know a lot of about Home Ec and share tips daily on this site. I must say I loved this book and learned a ton too!

Heather has friendly writing style that makes you feel like you are taking advice from your friend. She gives practical tips and doesn’t beat around the bush with fluffy language or fancy words. The only thing I would change about this book is photos. I am a visual learner and I would love to have photos incorporated with the tips.

There are chapters on cleaning, laundry, cooking, and small household repairs. My favorite section of the book was the household repairs, as it is very expensive to pay for a service call only to find out the repair is very basic and could have been preformed without a professional.

The book also includes many charts for quick reference including ingredient substitutions and which cleaning chemicals react to each other.

A few tips I learned from Home Ec 101:

Flat paint hides imperfections in the wall much better than satin or semi-gloss.

Dark jeans should be washed inside out, the friction from the machine causes fading.

A items in the freezer will stay frozen for twenty-four to forty-eight hours during a power outage if you don’t open the door.

Run the bathroom fan during and for 15 minutes after a shower, it decreases moisture in the air and you will have less mold to clean in your shower!

As a homeschooling parent I can see this book being used as a supplement to any Home Ec homeschool curriculum, or even adapted to be used a curriculum.

To help jump start your spring cleaning I have two copies of Home Ec 101 to give away. To enter leave a comment. Giveaway ends April 2, 2011.

My spring cleaning is in full swing.
