It&#8217;s amazing how easy it is to makeover a chair. Plus, chairs are actually expensive to purchase new, so any time you can give a chair a makeover it&#8217;s a WIN!\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>While I was in Florida, I had the opportunity to recover some dining room chairs, passed on to me from my grandfather. I remembered this set from my childhood and although the chairs were dated, I thought they had potential. The dining room table seats ten and I knew it would be perfect for our large family.<\/p>\n<p>I had never recovered chairs before but with the help of my family I knew we could figure it class=\"wprm-recipe-instruction-text\" style=\"margin-bottom: 5px;\"><span style=\"display: block;\">Using the old chair fabric, cut fabric for new chair covers. <\/span><\/div><\/li><li Pull as tight as possible. <\/span><\/div><\/li><li id=\"wprm-recipe-23258-step-0-7\" class=\"wprm-recipe-instruction\" style=\"list-style-type: decimal;\"><div class=\"wprm-recipe-instruction-text\" style=\"margin-bottom: 5px;\"><span style=\"display: block;\">Screw chair cushion back on chair frame. <\/span><\/div><\/li><\/ul><\/div><\/div>\n<div id=\"recipe-video\"><\/div>\n\n<\/div><\/div>\n<p><em>Before <\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/thehappyhousewife.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/05\/dscf01431.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-725\" src=\"\/\/thehappyhousewife.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/05\/dscf01431.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"326\" height=\"433\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>First we removed the seat cushions from the chair.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/thehappyhousewife.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/05\/dscf0144.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-726\" src=\"\/\/thehappyhousewife.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/05\/dscf0144.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"346\" height=\"259\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Then we removed the fabric from the cushions. For one cushion we were very careful while removing the fabric so that it would not rip.<\/p>\n<p>We would use the fabric as a template for the new cushions.\u00a0<br \/><a href=\"http:\/\/thehappyhousewife.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/05\/dscf0147.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-727\" src=\"\/\/thehappyhousewife.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/05\/dscf0147.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"344\" height=\"258\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>All projects are made easier when working in a room that has these types of tools and supplies.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/thehappyhousewife.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/05\/dscf0146.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-729\" src=\"\/\/thehappyhousewife.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/05\/dscf0146.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"360\" height=\"270\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/thehappyhousewife.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/05\/dscf0145.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-728\" src=\"\/\/thehappyhousewife.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/05\/dscf0145.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"391\" height=\"293\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Using the old fabric as a template we cut out the new chair covers.<\/p>\n<p>Make sure you are using upholstery fabric for this project. Regular fabric will not hold up to the wear and tear a chair normally gets. Upholstery fabric is thicker and more durable.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/thehappyhousewife.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/05\/dscf0148.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-730\" src=\"\/\/thehappyhousewife.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/05\/dscf0148.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"379\" height=\"284\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>We ironed the new fabric and sprayed it with Scotch Guard. Even though I really dislike to iron, it is so important to iron any fabric projects.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/thehappyhousewife.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/05\/dscf0175.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-735\" src=\"\/\/thehappyhousewife.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/05\/dscf0175.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"376\" height=\"282\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Before you think I am nuts, the floor we are working on is being replaced. I would not normally do a project like this without protecting the working area first.<\/p>\n<p>Then we used a staple gun to attach it to the seat. My advice for this part is wrap your fabric like you are wrapping a present. Pull it tight and have someone else hold it while you staple.<\/p>\n<p>Stapling the fabric to the chair is definitely easier when you have a second person helping. It can be done by one person, but you get a tighter pull when one person holds the fabric taut and one person stables.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/thehappyhousewife.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/05\/dscf0159.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-731\" src=\"\/\/thehappyhousewife.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/05\/dscf0159.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"335\" height=\"251\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>We removed the gold emblem from the top of the chair and reattached the cushions.<\/p>\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"768\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/thehappyhousewife.com\/frugal-living\/files\/2020\/04\/DIY-chair-recover-768x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-23254\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thehappyhousewife.com\/frugal-living\/files\/2020\/04\/DIY-chair-recover-768x1024.jpg 768w, https:\/\/thehappyhousewife.com\/frugal-living\/files\/2020\/04\/DIY-chair-recover-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/thehappyhousewife.com\/frugal-living\/files\/2020\/04\/DIY-chair-recover-1152x1536.jpg 1152w, https:\/\/thehappyhousewife.com\/frugal-living\/files\/2020\/04\/DIY-chair-recover.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>I recovered these chairs fourteen years ago. If I was doing the same project today I would have painted the chairs first before recovering them.
