My Favorite Money Saving Grocery Tip

Learning how to cook has saved me the most money in the grocery store. When I was first married I was lacking in the kitchen skills department. I relied heavily on convenience food and prepackaged items in order to feed my little family.

Over time I learned that if I made things from scratch I would not only be eating healthier, I would save a lot of money. While grocery shopping yesterday I couldn’t help but notice the enormous amount of prepackaged convenience food that lined the shelves. There are times when convenience is better than fast food, but it comes with a hefty price tag. By making your own bread, sauces, buying dried beans, cooking breakfast from scratch, and putting together homemade meals you can really save money.

While on vacation I purchased a Bertolli bagged pasta meal. I believe it was $5.99 and it served 2. The dish consisted of pasta, spinach, chicken and sauce. I make a very similar meal for my family of 8 and the ingredients cost under $5 for 8 servings.

If you aren’t queen of the kitchen, where do you begin? Start simple. Don’t decide to make everything from scratch on day one. Two of my few of my favorite food blogs are 5 Dollar Dinners and Cooking During Stolen Moments. Aside from being run from my friends Erin and Kate, both sites share simple, inexpensive recipes that are easy on the pocketbook.

If you search this site you will also find tutorials for beans, bread, bagels, and many more easy from scratch recipes.

For those who are beginning to cook, I suggesting setting a goal of one or two from scratch meals a week. Try to make something that your family likes and is familiar with to guarantee success. Perhaps you could serve spaghetti and make your sauce and garlic bread from scratch. Or make a taco dinner with homemade seasoning mix, tortillas, and refried beans.

Many from scratch food items can be prepared in advanced and frozen for a quick meal at a later date, so even on the busy nights you can serve healthy home cooked meals for less.

  3. Yes! Over the last year or so Iv really discovered the big savings that can happen when cooking from scratch. Iv even started to make things I would normally only eat when out. Everything from frappachinos to chicken strips.
    And once you get in the swing of things, it isn’t really much more time consuming then the convenient foods. And much more tasty!

  5. I think the biggest savings I have seen in my pocket book was when I started making my own seasoning mixes. One thing I have found is that instead of flour in my taco seasoning I put cornstarch, it seems to not alter the taste as flour sometimes does. Also getting a good Cream of mix works wonder on your pocket book also. But one thing I haven’t been able to successfully duplicate is breakfast gravy 🙁 Anyone out there have a recipe for that????

  6. Sawmill gravy

    I take one pound of bulk sausage and brown. I then add (dont drain off the little bit of grease) flour so it is pretty thick. I start with about 1/2 cup. It will be very pasty. Now slowly add milk. YOu can use up to 2 cups but you have to add a little bit at a time 1/4 cup each time. Cook on medium and stir frequently. When it is the desired thickness to your taste, add some Mrs. Dash and a tad of salt and pepper. It is our families favorite over homemade biscuits.
    I use pepperidge farms sage sausage.

  7. Cooking doesn’t have to be hard or time consuming, but it really does save money. I have a list of Low Cost Meals on my blog and they are all very easy to make.

  8. When I think about my first attempts at scratch cooking, it makes me almost laugh out loud. My family was very tolerant! But now, there are very few things I don’t make from scratch. Just a little research and a little trial and error. 😉

  11. I cook often, but we get into eating ruts. To help with that, and to expand my easy meals, I found one of those simple dinner in 20 minute cookbooks and started working my way through it. Ok, so most of what we tried we won’t make again, but I learned how to make a great vegetarian risotto in 20 minutes thanks to that venture. Even my husband who dislikes rice, likes the risotto.
