I Fly for Peanuts!

Nuts About Southwest
I am not a world traveler, in fact I really do not like airplanes, especially ones that plan on leaving the tarmac. But, by necessity I occasionally have to be a big girl and get on an airplane that actually leaves the ground. Since I also do not like to spend a lot of money I almost always fly on Southwest.

Why? Because they are cheap, fun, and laid back. I would say just like me, but I don’t want you to get the wrong idea. They also have a super easy frequent flyer program. Each one-way ticket earns you one credit. It takes just sixteen credits; within 24 consecutive months to receive a Standard Award, valid for a free round trip Award for travel on Southwest Airlines. There is no fine print, no black out dates, it is a simple program and I like simple.

But the absolute best thing about Southwest is DING! If you have not downloaded DING on to your computer and you travel at all you are paying too much for your ticket.

What is DING? Well, taken straight from the Southwest website, DING is;

  • Free downloadable application that sits on your desktop.
  • Exclusive air fare offers delivered straight to you.
  • Deeply discounted pricing that is not available anywhere other than through the DING! application.
  • Customizable: Choose up to 10 airports of your choice and get live updates for your cities.

This is how it works. You download the application. It sits almost unnoticed on your computer. Then out of the blue you hear a little DING (you know, the sound you hear on an airplane that means you can start smoking unfasten your seat belt). When you hear the DING, click on the little Southwest icon and up pops the super cheap airfare deals to and from the cities you selected.

A few years ago I was able to buy $25 one-way tickets from Norfolk to Orlando. My brother-in-law is the DING King and is able to fly around the country for as little as $100 round trip.

So if you are planning on flying somewhere this summer, get DING to get the best deals on airfare. And if you want to fly for free you can enter their giveaway for a family four-pack of airline tickets to any destination Southwest serves in the U.S. Just don’t win because I am an entering too and I would love to take half of my family on a vacation this summer. 😉

And if I still haven’t convinced you to fly Southwest maybe this will…

If the economy has put a crimp in your vacation plans and you will not be flying anywhere this summer check out my Kid’s Love Travel book giveaway for a complete guide to day tripping in your state!

  1. *Because they are cheap, fun, and laid back* That is so true! We flew SW last week for our CA Trip/Cruise and the flight attendants were very funny. For example, when the plane landed, the flight attendant got on the speaker and said “Welcome to Maui…on no, sorry, that’s tomorrow’s trip. You folks are stuck in Minneapolis.” And then he started saying “Not yet, not yet, Get ready, get set, go! When the plane came to a stop and everybody jumped up out of their seats. I’ve never had such entertaining flight attendants. They even held a contest answering trivia questions about Mother’s Day to win free cards.
    Fun airline!

  2. Ha! I love that. I’ve only flown once, but that cracks me up 🙂

  3. Dude! Awesome!! I’m totally downloading Ding. Thank you!

  4. That is amazing that you got the tickets so cheap. Way to go. That is awesome. Thanks for the link. I’ll have to add it. Your blog is fabulous. Have a great day. Blessings from K-zoo!!

  5. All my family lives in OR. We use SW all the time. It is really the only airline we use. We love SW.

  6. We’ve been living on the West Coast for the last 14 years so we definitely know about SW.
    Great tip!

  7. Thanks for this. You convinced me to download “Ding”. Unfortunately, Southwest doesn’t fly to SC, so I have to find another resource for that! This will help with FL and TN, though!

  8. Hey, does Ding work with your Mac? For some reason I was under the impression that it didn’t work on Mac. I don’t have Parallels or Bootcamp, so I’m not sure. I totally love Southwest and fly it whenever possible.
The only problem is that they don’t have red-eye flights, which is sort of necessary to fly back East in a timely manner without wasting a whole day. (We’re taking a red-eye flight tomorrow night, in fact.) But I’m flying Southwest in 3 weeks to a friend’s wedding.

  9. Thanks for sharing this–I HATE to fly, but when I do–Southwest is my favorite.

  10. What a great resource! Thanks for sharing!

I love “DING” too! Our family got $25 one way tickets a couple of summers ago. It was great. I haven’t seen them that cheap since then, but at least with “DING” I can check out their best deals each day. And I also agree they are very friendly and alot of fun to travel with. (sorry I ended my sentence with a preposition!) 🙂

  12. Thanks for plugging Southwest. I AM affiliated with SWA – I’m one of the lovely flight attendants (currently on maternity leave…) and my husband is also a flight attendant. So, let me just use your site to say a HUGE THANK YOU to all of you who have supported us over the years! We wouldn’t be able to do what we do, if you weren’t there…so, for all of us that serve you – THANKS! We’ll see you on another Southwest Flight soon!

  13. Hi. I was just surfing around some blogs, and I came across yours. It’s pretty nifty and I’m really enjoying my stay here. I’ve bookmarked your site for daily visits, and I hope you’ll visit me. I’d love to have you. 🙂 Have a great day and I’ll see you around the blogosphere. 🙂

Love SouthWest! Great video. I would do ding – but we don’t have any plans to fly anywhere for a long while. Good to know, though.

  15. Nothing beats Southwest! My first commercial flight, at the age of 14, was on Southwest. I used to live close to Sky Harbor, so I fly them regularly. Unfortunately, since moving to FL, I haven’t flown Southwest. 🙁 They are here, but don’t fly where we need to go.

I almost got flights on SWA for the trip we’re taking at the end of May, but it didn’t work out. Maybe next time! I’ll have to install DING so mommy can fly away for sanity sake some day.

BTW…I don’t remember the whole song, but one attend sang as we prepared to disembark, “You fly us (Southwest) ‘cuz we’re cheap…cheap…cheap, cheap.”
