Preheat the oven to 350 degrees.
Grease an 8 x 8 inch baking pan.
In a small bowl, stir together flour and baking powder.
In another small bowl, stir together applesauce, cinnamon and cloves.
In a mixing bowl, beat together butter and brown sugar until smooth and creamy.
Add the flour mixture alternately with the applesauce, mixing well after each addition.
Stir in the shredded carrots.
Spread cake batter evenly in prepared pan. Bake for 45 minutes. Place on a wire rack to cool.
