The short answer is yes. However pumpkins that we purchase for carving (in America) are not grown to be cooked and don&#8217;t taste\u00a0great in traditional pumpkin recipes like pumpkin pie, <a href=\"http:\/\/thehappyhousewife.com\/cooking\/chocolate-chip-honey-pumpkin-muffins\/\">pumpkin muffins<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/thehappyhousewife.com\/cooking\/curried-pumpkin-soup\/\">pumpkin soup<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/thehappyhousewife.com\/cooking\/pumpkin-pancakes\/\">pumpkin pancakes<\/a>, etc.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-30750\" src=\"https:\/\/thehappyhousewife.com\/cooking\/files\/2016\/10\/BLG-A170-3_Jack-o-lantern.jpg\" alt=\"can you cook and eat a jack-o-lantern\" width=\"733\" height=\"500\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thehappyhousewife.com\/cooking\/files\/2016\/10\/BLG-A170-3_Jack-o-lantern.jpg 733w, https:\/\/thehappyhousewife.com\/cooking\/files\/2016\/10\/BLG-A170-3_Jack-o-lantern-300x205.jpg 300w, https:\/\/thehappyhousewife.com\/cooking\/files\/2016\/10\/BLG-A170-3_Jack-o-lantern-600x409.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 733px) 100vw, 733px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Jack-o-latern&#8221; pumpkins are typically large, flat bottomed, filled with less flesh. Their seeds, however, are plentiful and great for roasting.<\/p>\n<p>If you want to use fresh pumpkin in a recipe purchase a &#8220;pie pumpkin&#8221; from the grocery store. Pie pumpkins are specifically for baking. They are darker in color and are very dense which makes them perfect for baking.<\/p>\n<p>Do not\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/thehappyhousewife.com\/cooking\/how-to-cook-a-pumpkin\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"false noopener\">cook a pumpkin<\/a> that has already been carved and left\u00a0outside for an evening or two. Leave the large pumpkins for carving and use the smaller pie pumpkins in your baking.<\/p>\n<p>If you love pumpkin I highly recommend <a href=\"http:\/\/thehappyhousewife.com\/cooking\/how-to-cook-a-pumpkin\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">cooking a pie pumpkin<\/a>. Canned pumpkin isn&#8217;t pure pumpkin. Did you know it is a mixture of squash and pumpkin. The squashes causes it to be not as sweet as pure pumpkin.
