I didn&#8217;t until a few years ago when stores started running out of canned pumpkin around Thanksgiving.<\/p>\n<p>Not only is it easy to cook a pumpkin, you can store the extra pumpkin in your freezer for several months!<\/p>\n<p>Many recipes suggest cooking a pumpkin in the oven. Always one to experiment in the kitchen, and having an extra pie pumpkin on hand just in case the crock pot pumpkin experiment went totally wrong, I decided to try it anyway.<\/p>\n<p>All you need to cook a pumpkin in a crock pot is a pie pumpkin (these as smaller than the &#8220;jack-o-lantern&#8221; type pumpkins ), a crock pot and water.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>I cannot stress enough that this needs to be a pie or sugar pumpkin<\/strong><\/em>. There is a <a href=\"http:\/\/thehappyhousewife.com\/cooking\/can-you-cook-a-halloween-pumpkin-jack-o-lantern\/\" rel=\"false\">difference between pie pumpkins and carving pumpkins<\/a>. The pie pumpkins are located by the squash and gourds in the produce department at your grocery store.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Wash_the_outside\"><\/span>Wash the outside<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Wash the outside of your pumpkin with soap and water. Since the outside of the pumpkin will be touching the inside of the pumpkin while cooking you&#8217;ll want to make sure you&#8217;ve removed all the dirt from the outside before you cook it.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/thehappyhousewife.com\/cooking\/files\/2011\/09\/how-to-cook-a-pumpkin.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-19059\" title=\"how to cook a pumpkin\" src=\"\/\/thehappyhousewife.com\/cooking\/files\/2011\/09\/how-to-cook-a-pumpkin.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"550\" height=\"343\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thehappyhousewife.com\/cooking\/files\/2011\/09\/how-to-cook-a-pumpkin.jpg 550w, https:\/\/thehappyhousewife.com\/cooking\/files\/2011\/09\/how-to-cook-a-pumpkin-300x187.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 550px) 100vw, 550px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Cut_the_pumpkin_in_half\"><\/span>Cut the pumpkin in half<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Take the pie pumpkin and cut it in half. This is the most difficult step in the process because pumpkins are not easy to cut! You&#8217;ll want to use a serrated knife and use a sawing motion to cut the pumpkin in half.<\/p>\n<p><em>You can skip this step if the pumpkin is small enough to fit into your crock pot whole.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>If you have a small pumpkin and a large crock pot you can put the entire thing in the crock pot and cook it whole. This is actually easier and safer since you don&#8217;t have to saw the pumpkin in half.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Use smaller pumpkins to avoid cutting before cooking!&nbsp;<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/thehappyhousewife.com\/cooking\/files\/2011\/09\/how-to-cook-a-pumpkin_1.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-19060\" title=\"how to cook a pumpkin_1\" src=\"\/\/thehappyhousewife.com\/cooking\/files\/2011\/09\/how-to-cook-a-pumpkin_1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"550\" height=\"340\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thehappyhousewife.com\/cooking\/files\/2011\/09\/how-to-cook-a-pumpkin_1.jpg 550w, https:\/\/thehappyhousewife.com\/cooking\/files\/2011\/09\/how-to-cook-a-pumpkin_1-300x185.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 550px) 100vw, 550px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Remove_Seeds\"><\/span>Remove Seeds<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Once you&#8217;ve cut the pumpkin in half remove all the seeds and the stringy stuff inside the pumpkin. I usually take a sharp paring knife around the inside of the pumpkin and slice off the strings and seeds but you can also use a spoon or ice cream scoop to remove the innards. \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/thehappyhousewife.com\/cooking\/files\/2011\/09\/how-to-cook-a-pumpkin_2.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-19061\" title=\"how to cook a pumpkin_2\" src=\"\/\/thehappyhousewife.com\/cooking\/files\/2011\/09\/how-to-cook-a-pumpkin_2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"550\" height=\"377\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thehappyhousewife.com\/cooking\/files\/2011\/09\/how-to-cook-a-pumpkin_2.jpg 550w, https:\/\/thehappyhousewife.com\/cooking\/files\/2011\/09\/how-to-cook-a-pumpkin_2-300x205.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 550px) 100vw, 550px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>After you&#8217;ve removed the seeds and strings you&#8217;ll want to cut your pumpkin in a few smaller pieces. How many pieces depends on the size of your crock pot. The larger the crock pot the fewer the pieces.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Place_in_slow_cooker\"><\/span>Place in slow cooker<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/thehappyhousewife.com\/cooking\/files\/2011\/09\/how-to-cook-a-pumpkin_3.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-19062\" title=\"how to cook a pumpkin_3\" src=\"\/\/thehappyhousewife.com\/cooking\/files\/2011\/09\/how-to-cook-a-pumpkin_3.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"550\" height=\"366\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thehappyhousewife.com\/cooking\/files\/2011\/09\/how-to-cook-a-pumpkin_3.jpg 550w, https:\/\/thehappyhousewife.com\/cooking\/files\/2011\/09\/how-to-cook-a-pumpkin_3-300x199.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 550px) 100vw, 550px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Place the cut pumpkin in the crock pot and add about one cup of water.<\/p>\n<p>You want to make sure you have enough water in your crock pot to cover the bottom with about 3\/4 an inch of water.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Cook_on_high\"><\/span>Cook on high<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Turn the crock pot on high and cook for four hours. If it &#8220;falls off&#8221; the skin it is finished. Then using a spoon, scoop the pumpkin out of the skin. I put two cups of pumpkin in each bag.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/thehappyhousewife.com\/cooking\/files\/2011\/09\/how-to-cook-a-pumpkin_8.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-19067\" title=\"how to cook a pumpkin_8\" src=\"\/\/thehappyhousewife.com\/cooking\/files\/2011\/09\/how-to-cook-a-pumpkin_8.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"550\" height=\"366\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thehappyhousewife.com\/cooking\/files\/2011\/09\/how-to-cook-a-pumpkin_8.jpg 550w, https:\/\/thehappyhousewife.com\/cooking\/files\/2011\/09\/how-to-cook-a-pumpkin_8-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 550px) 100vw, 550px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>You can <a href=\"http:\/\/thehappyhousewife.com\/cooking\/how-long-does-frozen-pumpkin-last\/\" rel=\"false\">store your pumpkin in the refrigerator for a few days or freezer<\/a> for long term storage.<\/p>\n<p>When you cook a pumpkin in the crock pot it doesn&#8217;t absorb much, if any, of the water. This means your puree isn&#8217;t watery.<\/p>\n<p>Using a slow cooker also doesn&#8217;t heat up your kitchen, which is a benefit to those of us in the south.<\/p>\n<p>Pumpkin is very healthy, loaded with beta carotene and potassium as well as fiber.
