The recipe is below, and I have broken down the cost for the ingredients as well. I usually make this recipe in my bread machine. The directions below are for a mixer or by hand.<\/p>\n<h3>Whole Wheat Bread<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>1 1\/2 cups warm water (less than 1 cent)<\/li>\n<li>1\/3 cup olive oil ($0.44)<\/li>\n<li>1\/3 cup honey \u00a0($0.94)<\/li>\n<li>2 tsp salt ($0.02)<\/li>\n<li>2 Tbs Lecithin (optional)<\/li>\n<li>1 Tbs gluten ($0.08)<\/li>\n<li>4-4 1\/2 freshly milled hard white wheat flour ($0.80)<\/li>\n<li>1 Tbs yeast ($0.12)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em>Mix together all the liquids. Add yeast, salt, and gluten. Slowly add in flour. Knead for 10 minutes. Cover and let rest until doubled.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em> Roll out and place in bread pans. Let rise until doubled.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/\/i533.photobucket.com\/albums\/ee336\/anderbach\/IMG_0433.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"485\" height=\"323\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em>Bake at 350 degrees for approximately 20 to 25 minutes.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a target = \"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/s533.photobucket.com\/albums\/ee336\/anderbach\/March%202010%20Blog\/?action=view&amp;current=IMG_2847-1.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/\/i533.photobucket.com\/albums\/ee336\/anderbach\/March%202010%20Blog\/IMG_2847-1.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"Photobucket\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>For a smooth top brush with butter immediately after taking the bread out of the oven.<\/p>\n<p>A few notes about homemade bread. The elevation and temperature\/ humidity of your home can affect the bread&#8217;s rising time. Do not let the bread sit in the pan after it is cooked. The steam from the bread will gather around the bottom of the bread in the pan and make it soggy.<\/p>\n<p>I use <a target = \"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.breadbeckers.com\/store\/pc\/Norpro-Extra-Large-Loaf-Pan-12-x-4-5-x-3-30p2291.htm\" target=\"_blank\">Norpro extra long loaf pans<\/a>.\u00a0This recipe makes 2 pounds of bread or one long loaf and one mini loaf.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Total cost $2.41 for 2 one pound loaves of bread.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Is homemade bread cheaper than store bought bread? No, not if you include the cost of electricity as well as the cost of the mill. Most stores sell a loaf of white bread for around a dollar. But homemade whole wheat bread does taste better than any whole wheat loaf I have ever purchased at the store. It is also cheaper than those expensive whole wheat gourmet loaves.<\/p>\n<p>Whether you decide to purchase a mill or start making your own bread if your decision.
