If you have never made homemade marshmallow creme frosting you really should give it a try. It is so easy and so much better than the kind that comes in a can at the store. I just love homemade frosting.
What I love about making frosting yourself is that you can take a simple box cake mix or homemade cake and make it special. You can always tell a box cake and canned frosting. However I cannot tell you how many times I’ve made my own frosting on a box mix cake and had people RAVE about if! Homemade frosting takes it to a new level that canned frosting just does not do.
I make homemade frosting all the time. I have a chocolate frosting, a buttercream frosting, and a honey frosting that I love, but sometimes I like to change things up and make something different.
This homemade marshmallow creme frosting recipe is perfect for times like that. This frosting would work well for just about any cake or cupcake. It would go well with a chocolate cake, a white cake, and even a carrot or zucchini cake.
Homemade Marshmallow Creme Frosting
Homemade Marshmallow Creme Frosting
- 7 ounces marshmallow cream
- 1/2 cup butter softened
- 1 teaspoon vanilla
- 3 1/2 cups powdered sugar
- 1-2 tablespoons milk
- Mix all ingredients together until smooth.
- Beat for several minutes.
- Use to frost cupcakes, cakes, and other desserts.
You can spread it with a knife or spatula or get fancy and pipe it on with a pastry bag and tip. If you don’t have any pastry bags, you can always use a ziploc bag and cut the corner off to create piping.
This simple recipe is based off a Paula Deen recipe. A few months ago my daughter was sick and I asked her what she wanted to watch, she said a cooking show. Yes, she is my daughter after all.
So, I turned on the Food Network and Paula Deen was on. My daughter was so glad that she was able to watch the show. TV is a treat in our house, so yes Paula is exciting to my ten year old.
Paula was making a dessert on the show and the frosting that went with the dessert contained marshmallow creme. Well, I instantly knew I had to try some marshmallow creme in my frosting. Leave it to Paula to take frosting to a whole different level and add marshmallow cream. This is so not healthy, but it is oh so good!

Our favorite little local restaurant does sweet potato fries with marshmallow dipping sauce. I bet I could use this recipe to make something close at home. Thanks for sharing!
i agree about the homemade frosting making the whole cake taste so much better. i usually do fat free cream cheese blended with powdered sugar but this is a great alternative. i have some marshmallow cream i need to use so i will be making this
This frosting sounds amazing!
@Jennifer – we have a local restaurant that does the same thing with their sweet potato fries! I even asked them what was in the dipping sauce once – and they said it was simply marshmallows (no fluff), a pinch of cinnamon, and a little cream – I’ve recreated it at home MANY a times! =)

I think I just found a new favorite blog 🙂
Thanks so much for sharing this. Just made it and LOVE it!
We are going to use it on our cake pops! You can stop by http://craftingwithbug.blogspot.com later to see the final result 🙂
Thank you so much for simplifying Paula Dean’s recipe. I love marshmallow cream and I love icing and I cannot wait to try this. I have tinkered with homemade buttercream before, but until last week when I tried a recipe for strawberry cream cheese frosting (available at http://cupcakesandcandles.wordpress.com/2012/04/08/strawberry-cream-cheese-icing/)I had never made a truly good and tasty homemade frosting and I cannot wait to try yours. Thanks for sharing
this sounds so great and delicious thanks for sharing. My only concern is that i want to use this for cupcakes should the cupcakes be refridgerated after i place this on the cupcakes?

Fantastic recipe! I used marshmallows instead of marshmallow creme, and a little less sugar, but this is fabulous! Thanks for sharing!
Just made this and put only a half cup of sugar in and it was PLENTY sweet. We substituted half the butter with coconut oil and put toasted coconut flakes on top. Best frosting I’ve ever had! Thanks so much for sharing! I’m homeschooled, too – KD, Age 10
Just tried this recipe and it tastes like nothing but powdered sugar. Added another jar of marshmellow creme but it didn’t help much. Don’t know what to do now.
I always like to try new things so I took this receipt and added it in with another receipt and it is soo soo good I used 8 ounces of cream cheese 2 cups powdered sugar 2 tbs milk 1 cup butter half a bag of melted mini marshmallows and its different but its really good and doesn’t taste just like sugar
