We don't have Aldi's here - do they take coupons? I loooove this store. It's basic and clean(at least ours was in back in NC), but I don't need fancy shelves. I shop in the commissary but if we had an Aldis here I'd definitely have to make a pricebook. Since we live 30 minutes away from the commissary I HAVE to make a list, sort the coupons by isles and do big shopping, when I go.

I so enjoy our commissary! What a huge benefit! I do most of my shopping there, but Aldi does have some things that I can get for a better price. Our BX here is quite small and rarely has things that we need or want. :( It all depends on location.

I AM NOT IN THE MILITARY, BUT I LOVE TO READ YOUR BLOG. I HAVE HEARD THAT MILITARY FAMILIES CAN USE EXPIRED COUPONS. IS THAT TRUE? I WAS WONDERING, BECAUSE I HAVE ALOT OF EXPIRED AND COUPONS THAT I DO NOT USE. IF YOU CAN USE THEM OR KNOW OF SOMEONE THAT COULD, I WOULD LOVE TO SEND THEM TO SOMEONE THAT COULD USE THEM. PLEASE JUST LET ME KNOW IF I CAN SEND THEM TO YOU.

This is such a great post chock-full of information. Now I have something to point someone to when they want the low-down on commissary shopping. I've also been meaning to start my own price book...

I just did a big post about commissary shopping. I only go every 3 months because of the distance for me. http://www.halleethehomemaker.com/2009/11/commissary-day-recap/

It is amazing the difference in overseas commissaries. Some are so awesome and others stink! I think it has a lot to do with the managers...
But that is just my opinion.

The commissary isn't always cheaper here in Europe (veggies are often MUCH cheaper on the economy, even with the really bad exchange rate), but they do accept coupons that are expired up to 6 months after the expiration date. The PX is often far less expensive. They are getting better, but I wish they had more of a selection.

Great article! This is so true...and I sure wish I had a dollar for every time I've had the "Is the commissary cheaper?" discussion. I would be wealthy.

I make price books at every duty station. The commissary really is cheaper. I shop for loss leaders at local grocery stores (tip: bring only enough cash to buy those sale items so you won't buy higher-priced things on impulse) and religiously compare prices at Costco. I am now very good at dividing by 6 and 8 in my head!

The only thing that would make my commissary more expensive would be moving it farther away - and it would have to be at least 45 minutes away for me to consider changing my shopping habits.

I am SO THANKFUL for the commissary. We are a one income E-6 AF homeschooling family with four boys. I was at the commissary earlier today. They had Rice Chex for $1.99 and a $1.00 off coupon for two! I was SO EXCITED! Two of the six of us have Celiacs disease. Not many cereals are gluten free! The whole store had some really good deals. Have a great weekend!
