Time for a history lesson. Today’s Thursday Thirteen 10th edition is about the first thirteen colonies in the United States. At first I thought about listing the colonies and giving some random facts about them, but I am feeling a little smarty pants-ish (is that a word) today, so I am going to give some of my own random thoughts about the thirteen colonies, or rather the states that they are today.
Virginia (1607) – Out of the 13 states, Virginia is my favorite, it has the mountains, it has the beach, it is just beautiful! They have great homeschool laws too.
New Jersey (1618) – I have only driven through New Jersey. I have never met anyone who has had anything positive to say about New Jersey. I have also never met anyone who currently lives there, everyone has left and lives somewhere else.
Massachusetts (1620) - I have not spent too much time in Massachusetts, I love the accent, don’t care for the Kennedys.
New Hampshire (1622) – You have to love a state who has the motto “Live Free or Die” on it’s license plate. I have never been to New Hampshire, but I would like to visit.
Pennsylvania (1623) – Probably my second favorite state after VA. It is beautiful. I also think it is funny that people from PA don’t think they have an accent.
New York (1624) – New York City seems entertaining, but I don’t think I would want to live there. Too many people.
Maryland (1634) – My current home. I never thought I would like Maryland, but I do. It is pretty and there are so many things to do here. While I don’t think this is a forever state for me, I am enjoying it while I am here.
Connecticut (1635) – I have only spent a few days in CT years ago. I don’t have much of a memory of it other than that it was pretty.
Rhode Island (1636) – Cold, cold, cold
Delaware (1638) – I am not a big fan of Delaware. Can any of you give me a reason to start liking Delaware? I have spent a small amount of time there and was not impressed.
North Carolina (1653) – I have always liked North Carolina, perhaps because it borders my favorite state, Virginia. I love the southern accent and hospitality.
South Carolina (1670) - South Carolina is hot! I can say this because I was raised in Florida. South Carolina seems charming to me, how can you go wrong with Charleston? Another cute thing about South Carolina is that their state troopers wear these big hats, and look very authoritative. Not that I would have seen any of them close up, I am always driving too fast… (just kidding mom).
Georgia (1733) - I really want to like Georgia, I haven’t spent much time there, but it also seems to have that same southern charm as the Carolinas.
There you go, the thirteen original colonies… which one is your favorite?

I would probably choose New York only because of my love affair with NYC. For some reason I always thought Vermont was one of the 13, obviously not. Thanks for sharing the dates and Happy TT.

I live in Virginia and agree with you. Virginia is for lovers!

Well, I’ve lived in South Carolina before, and honestly didn’t like it too much. The weather was dreadfully hot and humid, and I found that Charlestonians drive like crazy people!
In college, my husband and I traveled around the country in our college’s singing group, and I was able to visit every state in the continental U.S EXCEPT for the states of Deleware, Pennsylvania, and the states north of those. I have always WANTED to visit New England, however, especially in the fall when the leaves turn.
Funny you should mention that the only people from New Jersey you’ve met don’t live there any more; that’s true for me too. We had a wonderful family move from NJ to Dallas a few months ago, and they’re the only people from NJ I’ve ever met!

Sometimes we ‘need’ to be smartypantish…
I have been to Georgia…Haven’t lived there my Husband went to jump school there and was stationed there for a VERY short time. And he hated it….the weather and everything about it…
GREAT Thursday Thirteen.

What a great topic!. I would never have thought of that.

I’ve been to ten of them. I’d like to see the other three. Is Rhode Island especially cold then?

Ugh….Virginia takes FOREVER to drive through. We have to go through there on our drive from PA to TX to visit my family and it always feels like it’s never going to end both coming and going!
PA people *DO* have an accent (says the born & raised Texan stuck there).
As far as the rest, I’ve not really been to them, so I’ll take your word for it. LOL
Thanks for the comment!

okay… so.. Virginia … at that time West Virginia was apart of of Virginia. So I would say Va only b/c of that
But if I say that I love VA Gabe might shoot me LOL…
oh and I agree with what you said about PA. they don’t think they have an accent LOL

I think I’d like NC best. It’s funny though when you talk about accents. Our NV family thinks we here in MI have an accent. Guess it’s anything you aren’t familiar with.

I don’t think that sounded smartypantsish at all…in fact I am quite impressed!! What a GREAT idea for Thursday Thirteen!

I’ve been to all 13 and lived in 5 of them. By FAR my favorite is Rhode Island. It was gorgeous. And gorgeous trumps cold, cold, cold any day! I was born in NY, married in SC, my daughter was born in VA, I became a New Englander in my heart in RI, and I currently live in GA.

Dover, Delaware has the Air Mobility Command Museum, right next to Dover AFB. We’re slowly working our way through all the aviation museums in the Mid-Atlantic, and we really enjoyed this one.
There’s one reason to like Delaware! (The Dover AFB Air Show is great, too!)
