Dana,

I took these tests on US military bases all over the world. If you have access to a base education office you should ask for the fee charged to family members for these tests. In most, if not all, cases the fee would be significantly less than the cost of a college course. From the DANTES site: Effective 1 October 2008, the civilian test/retest fee at DANTES Test Sites and at National Test Centers is $80. National Test Centers may also charge a registration fee.

Fees may vary for CLEPs. But both remain free for active duty.

Thanks,

TH Husband

I did the 27 credits in a day thing on base in 1990. It's possible your husband's base has rules that preclude taking that many tests in one day. I am unaware of any DOD regulation that requires servicemembers to pay if they fail the test. I'd ask for that rule in writing.

Interesting. My husband was misinformed then.

And he was also told you can only do one test per day, so doing what your husband did, getting all those credits in one day, would be impossible for him.
Did your husband do it through the base or a civilian place?

This is seriously underutilized. Of course I no longer know anyone active duty to pass the info along to, but sure would've been great to realize years ago!

If you fail the first time and have to retake it are the costs covered for retesting?
