Washington D.C. in the Snow

I must admit my husband is a pretty cool guy, he is always up for my ideas no matter how crazy. So when I asked if we could hop on the train to D.C. so I could get pictures of the White House in the snow, he said yes without batting an eye. Well, I exaggerate a little, he did give me that, “are you for real” look but he hopped on the train with me nonetheless.

D.C. was a mess, the mall was completely covered snow and you had to walk on top of the snow to get from one side to the other. I was surprised at how few people were there, but given the weather and the snow I can’t imagine many tourists would brave the conditions. We walked by the the Capital, the Washington Monument, and stopped at a few museums on the way, and finally made it to the White House.

It was just as pretty as I had imagined and it was fun to take pictures even if we had to stand outside the fence. icon smile Washington D.C. in the Snow

Great shots! I thought about going into DC on Sunday, but couldn’t convince myself. Had my husband been home, he’d have been all for it. Thanks for sharing the photos!

  2. Carmen says:

Great winter pics! We used to live near DC. We now live in northern Indiana. I miss being able to just hop on the metro and go visit the capital whenever we wanted. I’m missing that just a wee bit! ;)

  3. Rebecca P says:

I just love our capital! It makes me feel like Mr. Smith, in Mr. Smith goes to Washington, looking at it :-) Thanks for these cool pics!

I just quit working in DC at New Years to stay home with my kiddos… let me tell you how glad I am that I didn’t have to commute in that mess! (Oh yeah, our office was totally still open). I do miss walking by the white house every day though. Something about the city at 6:30 in the morning is so peaceful.

I would love to venture out to DC for some snow pictures. Yesterday was the first day that I’ve been able to take my van out for a week+. All I want to do is GO!!

    I’ve never been to D.C. Yes, oh-so deprived as a child! :)

  9. Hi Toni,
I know you got a ton of snow, but those photos are so beautiful. I love the one of you shawdows.

These are lovely! I spent last fall semester studying with a Christian program in Washington, DC, so it’s fun for me to see these familiar landmarks covered in snow.

  11. Tonya says:

I love DC but I’m glad I’m not in the snow!

  12. Those are awesome pics! Were the museums completely empty? If they keep canceling school, it might be worth hopping on the red line to head on down.

    • TheHappyHousewife says:

Museums were nearly empty. The Fenwick Gallery had two other visitors. The American History had probably 100 people in it total.

  13. Allison says:

Very neat pics! Thanks for posting!

  14. Very nice pictures. I also have a husband that is fun like that. I’m afraid he babies me too much. :)

  15. Tatiana says:

I wish I could appreciate the snow as much as you, but just so hard to! Our neighborhoods are still pretty bad and the Prince William County schools are still closed, since February 5th. I am an Arizona gal, so this is tough for me!

  16. Mikki says:

    Great shots!
This is the first year since we moved to Florida from MD that we are really missing snow.. not that much snow.. but just snow in general!!

What a great hubby you have! DC can be so much fun when you don’t have to drive in it. LOL!

  17. Kathi says:

I will be taking my very first trip to DC next year about this time when Hubby *finally* graduates from Liberty Universtiy!
We are taking our 7 children to see him graduate college and visit our Nation’s capital! We can’t wait…

  18. Cherrill Hartsfield says:

I have never been but now I’m getting that littl nudge that says wouldn’t that be a great bucket list item.

  19. Angela says:

Wow!! How fun would that be to hop on a train to see Washington DC. I am from Texas and have been to DC a few times and love it! How neat would it be to see it under snow!! Great pictures!

  20. Stephanie says:

What a fun little adventure! How far is the train ride to DC from where you live?

  21. Nancy M. says:

Gorgeous pictures! Your husband really was sweet to go with you! That sounds like something I would have done, lol!

  22. Sherry says:

Wow! It looks beautiful covered in white! :D I hope to get back there one day. I haven’t been to D.C., actually seeing the sights, since I was 15 or 16. I know my children would love to see it. :D
