Remember last month when I told you how much I loved my hometown of Orlando, Florida? Well ten finalists have been chosen and it is time to vote for the Single Best Town in America. I have to admit, when I visited the contest website I got sucked in reading about these towns. It seems I am not the only one who has a love for my hometown.
Even if you didn’t make it into the finals, you can still win a $125 Amex gift card on The Happy Housewife. To enter the giveaway, go vote for your Single favorite town of the ten semifinalists then leave a comment and tell me what your single best afternoon looks like in your own hometown. I will randomly pick two winners on March 23, 2010.
I have partnered with KRAFT Foods to help promote the “Single Best Town” in America program. I have been compensated for my time commitment to the program, which includes writing about my own hometown experiences and hosting a giveaway where the prize has been provided by KRAFT Singles. However, my opinions are entirely my own and I have not been paid to publish positive comments.

A perfect afternoon in my hometown would be spent out at Patriot’s park, playing at the playground & hiking around the lake, followed by dinner at Mario’s pizza!
I voted for Gastonia, not too far from me. A perfect afternoon here would be a drive in the mountains with the sunroof open and a picnic lunch!
Voted for Colorado Springs.
I’m surprised my hometown isn’t there- I’m from Northern California, and it’s beautiful there. Though I’m biased to our less populated area now (Montana). A perfect afternoon in my hometown would be a walk on the beach!

A single best afternoon in my town would be climbing the mountains and being able to look down on the city and seeing all the local eateries and shops
I voted for the little town in IL since I’m from IL.
A perfect afternoon in my hometown would be spent at Rock Springs Center with some friends. We could hike the trails or walk through the pine forest. We might hang out in the visitors center and watch the wildlife through the viewing window. The kids might play while us moms catch up and hang out.

I voted for Bell Buckle, TN. And, a perfect afternoon in our town would be a walk down Main Street looking at all the unique statues and lunch at Mangos
I voted for Lexington, KY because I lived there for 4 years and it is a great place and if I was there for an afternoon, I’d probably spend most of it walking around at the cemetery because it is SO beautiful in the spring and there are amazing, interesting graves there. Then I’d drive around the old, historic districts and pretend I lived in the big ol’ houses. And I’d definitely end with Graeter’s ice cream on Romany Rd.
Well I live in a somewhat small town in the Midwest. A perfect afternoon in my hometown would be to start off in our historic downtown, grab a dessert from the Alotta Brownie shop, and walk around the antique shops (we are known for our antique stores, we have more than 15 antique stores in our town, they call us the Antique Capital!), after wondering through the downtown, we would take a picnic lunch out to the lake and watch the sunset and feed the duckies some bread. (We have done this sort of day a lot, its a nice way to spend the summer months!)
I voted for Girad, IL with the Doc’s shop looks great!!
A perfect day in my town of near Carson City would include shopping in one of the many antique shops around town followed up with a meal at Local’s BBQ – yum! Thanks for the giveaway!
I vote for Colo. springs, Co.
A perfect day for my hometown is hiking anywhere-it’s so beautiful and grand here…but most people would say spending the day fishing on the gorgeous Kenai River.
The perfect afternoon in my hometown would probably be people going to the beach and surfing.
My favorite afternoon in my town is on the first weekend of April. Here we have a street fair called Big Hat Days. Everyone is either wearing or buying a hat (or both) walking around checking out the booths eating corn on the cob or corn dogs. It’s fun to watch my three kids struggle with whether or not they really want to wear their hats or ask for new ones. My youngest always wants a new pretty one. My oldest wants to play on the rides. But my middle child tries to toss his hat over the side of his chair–repeatedly. It’s a nice afternoon outside all together–because I drag the DH–cuz it’s really HIS hometown!
I voted, such great stories on that site!
A perfect afternoon in my little hometown would be a walk to the park with my husband and two children, and then a stop at the ice cream shop on the way home.
A perfect afternoon in my hometown would be just sitting on a park bench in the warm sun!

I voted for Colorado Springs–the outdoors makes me happy! In my hometown, we can go for hikes in the mountains and spend the day outside. That would be the perfect day for us here!
We actually had some perfect days here in Orlando this past weekend–beautiful blue skies, a little breezy with a crispness in the air, all the windows open in the house… The best part was getting outside all day on Saturday with my family and enjoying it.
I voted for Colorado Springs since it does sound wonderful but in reading the comments on Augusta, GA, I had to smile since I used to live on Walton Way!
I voted for Blue Buckle, TN.
A perfect afternoon in my hometown is taking an early picnic dinner to the beach on a warm summer afternoon, swimming for awhile, maybe playing some frisbee or volleyball, then lighting a bonfire and roasting marshmallows while watching the sunset with friends and family.
A perfect day for me would be to take the children to the park and zoo for an enjoyable day outside.
My single best afternoon? Whenever we go to Webster’s Falls. We are so blessed to live near there – it is like a fairytale land with walking trails, picnic spots and an amazing view of the falls. With no time constraints, grabbing our picnic and just playing by the stream, watching our little ones delight is the ultimate!
I voted for Bell Buckle, TN – not too far from me. The perfect afternoon in my hometown would be to gather the children from every tree fort and play spot and head to the playground downtown that was totally built by volunteers- we would pack a picnic and let the little ones play .
I voted for Colorado Springs.
In my hometown of Charleston, SC the perfect afternoon is a walk down market street to wander through the vendors tables of inspired handcrafts and then a walk around the Battery.
I voted for Colorado Springs, CO since I did an internship there and loved it. The perfect afternoon in my hometown would include the Botanical Conservatory and DeBrand Chocolate! (and probably some shopping, because really…what would a perfect day be without a little shopping!)
A perfect afternoon for me would be my girls playing in our backyard with plenty of the friends while I was on the deck reading a good book and watching them play.
A single best afternoon in my hometown would be to spend it at Maymont Park looking at all of the animals and flowers while touring the grounds. It is such a beautiful place to walk around! We would have to finish up the afternoon by stopping by a local shop, The French Quarter, to eat some of the BEST ice cream EVER!!!
Start with sunny and 70 degrees, mix in 4 happy children, stir up some great food and head over to Casey park for a picnic and hiking the trail. Later walk downtown for ice cream and then hit the library for movie night later. =)
I am from a small town in Northern California. I would start my afternoon by talking a walk up the trail to the dam then back down to town for a dinner at Steamer’s..then would grab a cup of coffee and window shop all of the
great stores. I am from Los Gatos and it is a great place to visit.
My vote went to Colorado Springs.
In my town, a perfect afternoon, would involve a sometime brisk-sometimes leisurely walk around the beautiful park where baseball teams meet, young children happily play on the playground, and families and friends visit.
I voted for Bell Buckle, TN. I have family there.
In my hometown, the perfect afternoon would be flying a kite at the park followed by a large sicilian pizza from Frank’s, enjoyed along the shore of the lake.
I voted for Bell Buckle, TN. I have family near there and have been there twice myself and LOVE it.
I love a day at the park with friends or family! A stop for ice cream is a fun treat too! I think the simple things are the most fun!
Toni, love the photo of your son on the porch!
I voted for Colorado Springs because I loved it when we visited there. My hometown is a small town in PA and while that used to seem boring, I would love to get back there and just enjoy a fresh from the farm lunch while sitting on the mosquito-free back deck and listening to the Amish buggies and watching the beauty of nature. Then getting lots of fresh produce from the garden and having a garden-fresh dinner!
My single best afternoon in my hometown of Kingsport TN would involve strolling through the crowds and booths at FunFest. Then I would buy some dinner from the many vendors from Taste of the Tri-Cities and share it with my family on a picinic blanket while listening to the free concert. After dark I would watch the spectacular fireworks display.
I voted for Bell Buckle, TN. I love it when old towns can be preserved and not have Neon everywhere. Honestly, I just liked the picture and how quaint it was! Thanks~
A perfect day would be me and my kids having fun at a park – somewhere near water. We would fly kites, play frisbee, maybe even fish for whatever we can catch in the water. We’d have a huge picnic and go for a long walk afterward. On our way home we would stop at a soda shop for icecream. It would be one of those days we talk about for years…
A perfect afternoon for me would to be at our beach cottage in Corolla, NC hanging outwith my huband, daughter, son and my beautiful Yorkshire. We use it as a rental but from time to time we stay there. My husband did all the work on it himself and it looks like a doll house. Recently, I was diagnosed with Melanoma and it is the perfect place to forget all your problems. It is beatuiful there and so is life.
I LOVE Corolla, NC! Just discovered it last year and it is one of my favorite places ever!
Gastonia NC!!!
Honestly, my ideal afternoon is when my husband takes the kids to do something fun and I get to stay home in the silent house and take a nap!
I voted for Michigan, since that is where I am now!
My perfect afternoon is when my sister in law and I take our kids down to the beach and watch them all swim and play in the sand. We started this weekly outing during the summer when we first moved here 8 years ago, I think all the kids look forward to summer knowing that they all get that weekly swim and play in the sand day together! Even though the older ones are teenagers now, they still have lots of fun.
Now that the time changed our afternoons are beautiful here in Bakersfield, CA the birds chirping, the leaves rustling, the dogs barking, the sun setting and my handsome hubby mowing the lawn.
Our best day would be taking our kids to the local drive-up hamburger stand and getting burgers, curly-q’s and milkshakes. Since my hometown is tiny and rural, we’d take the kids for a drive and show them places we played when we were kids…the lake, the tennis courts, maybe the ball fields. We’d just enjoy the local smalltown scenery and relax!
I voted for Hamburg. The best afternoon in my small little home town up in Idaho is split between the dogwood festival and the going boating on the river.
I voted for Augusta!!
The perfect day in Billings MT would be a hike and a picnic at Zimmerman park on top of the Rims that tower above the city, a round of golf and dinner out!!
I voted for Gastonia,NC as it is just an hour from me. My perfect afternoon in my hometown would be a walk and reading a book on a bench at Hatcher Gardens. Mr Hatcher spent a lifetime building this beautiful garen for his wife. He donated it to the city after his wife died and he could no longer care for it. I am always struck by all the work he did and the love poured out in that work for his wife. It started out as a gully behind their small white cottage that had been used as a dump of sorts. A really peaceful and beautiful place right in the middle of our city-Spartanburg, SC.
Hey Toni,
is this open international?
And ideal afternoon in Salem, Oregon would consist packing a picnic lunch for my daughters & ambling through Bush Park’s historic rose garden, over to the Crooked House playground and then lunching under one of their gorgeous oak trees in the lush lawn w/a blanket. We of course would pack some unsalted peanuts in w/our lunch to share w/the family of grey squirrels that call those trees home and watch as they do acrobatics in the branches overhead. Afterward we would stop at Mill Creek and feed the families of mallards & geese the ends of our bread loaves, leftover pancakes & such that we save for this purpose in our freezer.
I voted!
Single best afternoon in my town would start with lunch at the Humble Cafe and then roller skating at the rink a little further down the street. It’s already getting too mosquito-ey to spend too much time outside!
I voted for “A Stitch in TimeContest Photo by: FamilyFun_Team

The single best town, in my opinion, is Scottsdale, Arizona! Paradise!! Perfect weather and perfect surroundings!! Old Town Scottsdale is a great place to show guests and there are plenty of unique places to eat and shop!!!
I voted for Richmond, MI since I’m from Michigan!
As an Ann Arbor native, I’d probably spend an afternoon downtown exploring the Arboretum, shopping, visiting the farmer’s market, and eating at one of hundreds of amazing restaurants. Here in my adopted hometown of Lansing, I’d probably do the same thing, only stroll in the Woldumar Nature Center instead!
Despite living in Las Vegas, I think my best day would be very similar to a lot of families; maybe riding bikes to the park and library and then an evening spent together. ^_^
I voted for Colorado Spring because I am originally from Pueblo, CO.
However, my hometown is Granville, OH. It is the PERFECT pleasantville and I am so happy to be from there.
My perfect afternoon would be stopping by the farmer’s market where my family has their produce stand and visiting with all the people I grew up selling tomatoes and corn too. Then my family goes to Elm’s pizza for our after market lunch. About 10 of us sit around the table and catch up after a hard work week in the fields. Finally, my Dad surprises us all and says he will treat us to some Whit’s Custard! We all walk over and I get my favorite Mint Grasshopper and we all taste each others flavors before heading home to clean up and start a new work week.
That is my heaven and my perfect life and childhood. I get to live my perfect afternoon… every Saturday from May – October. STOP BY
I live in Chicago. My best afternoon would be a trip to the big public library followed by people watching at Intelligentsia, the best local coffeeshop.

In my hometown, a lovely afternoon has the perfect sunny weather, kids laughing at the park, and pretty flowers in bloom.

I live in WV and a perfect afternoon would have to be, fishing on our dock, swinging from our rope swing, and drifting down the Elk River.
A perfect afternoon in my hometown is taking my son to the botanical gardens to feed the ducks and play on the train. Then I love going to get frozen yogurt and walk along the boardwalk.
A perfect afternoon in my hometown would be walking on the beach with your dog, or playing on the beach with your kids.

My husband and I don’t go out too often. We prefer to stay home with the kids most of the time. So, my best day would be beautiful and sunny (but not too hot). The kids would get to play outside most of the day, including a yummy picnic lunch. Long naps for them and a good book for me. Delicious dinner with hubby and kids (love the local P.F. Changs!), kids bathed and in bed early, then me and hubs watch a romantic movie and eat chocolate. Sounds blissful!
I voted for Hamburg NY as it is where my SIL lives and 15 minutes from my house.
A perfect afternoon would be watching one of our amazing parades. We have one every year for Dairy Fest which is in honor of all the dairy farms in the area. The fest also brings out tons of people for good food, entertainment ( like Bossy cow bingo) and fun.
My vote went to Three Lakes WI. I’m from WI and my best afternoon would be shopping the farmers market, seeing some friends, and grilling out when it starts cooling off.
I voted for Three Lakes, Wisconsin.
My favorite day in my hometown is a beautiful fall day at the farm, with the harvest in full swing and the gorgeous colors all around.
I voted for Three Lakes, WI. I have so many fond memories of growing up in the Midwest and WI reminds me of my own hometown. My best afternoon would be any time spent hanging out with my family on the college campus in my hometown of Huntington, IN. My dad works at the college and I grew up just blocks away from campus. I have so many fond memories of picnics and bike rides on the beautiful, tree-filled acres there. Once I became a student there, I even have some fond memories of studying on one of the shady lawns by the fountain!
Email: elizabeth at bouma-holtrop dot com.
My favorite afternoon is playing at the park & flying kites during the summer with my hubby & kiddos. so relaxing to to just slow down and be together!
The best afternoon in my city of Cincinnati, Ohio is sitting on Serpentine Wall and watching the Ohio River.
I voted for Bell Buckle, TN. Being a Southern girl, it tugged at my heart! A perfect day in my hometown (Sherwood, Arkansas) would probably be around the 4th of July. A flag raising ceremony and breakfast at church, followed by a lazy afternoon of grilling and family fun! Top it all off with a night of fireworks on the river and music from the Little Rock symphony – can’t get much better!
I voted for Richmond, MI because the picture looks like a lot of laid back fun. A perfect afternoon here would be a drive in the mountains and then a stop at one of the local wineries!
My Single Best Afternoon would be spent taking my kids to Green Hill Park in Salem, VA. There’s a playground, walking path suitable for youngsters on bikes, trails in the woods for the more adventurous, and the Roanoke River runs alongside the path so there is plenty to see and do. Throw in a picnic lunch and the scenic mountains and you’ve got yourself a pretty fine day!
Oh, and I voted for Augusta, GA
I voted for Gaston, NC. Single best afternoon in my hometown of Dallas for me would be eating some delicious Tex-Mex, shopping and perhaps enjoying a museum or seeing a musical at Fair Park.
The perfect afternoon in my hometown is a stroll through the antique stores downtown followed by dinner at one of the great restaurants nearby.
My Single Best afternoon is spent at South Padre Island on the beach with my hubby and three year old son. We would play, picnic, and lounge.
My single best afternoon in my hometown of Portland, Oregon is an afternoon at the Saturday Market (actually it is a Saturday and Sunday affair. Where all the craft vendors gather (it is huge) and there is a food tent and live music. Google Saturday Market/Portland, Oregon and if you ever come to the Northwest include it in your visit. I voted BTW also.
I voted for Twinsburg – where else can you see double. A great afternoon in my town would call for a ride to the Amish country in Ohio nearby. We love the countryside of rolling hills and buggies and the cute shops. Nothing beats a trip to shop and eat.
I loved spending afternoons in my hometown just looking at the gorgeous Rocky Mountains.
I read each town and all are worthy, as all of our towns are in this our great country. I finally choose Augusta, Georgia.
Growing up here in my small (but growing) South Fla. coastal town my family would gather with all our aunts, uncles, and cousins at least once a year for a huge gathering at one of our beautiful beaches. We could easily have 50 folks or more from newborn babies to the eldest patriarch of 80 or more. Generally, my dad would get up very early and go tag and guard lots of tables in the picnic area. Later heaping piles of homemade southern delights would cover those tables end to end. Ummm, I can taste the fried chicken now.
Our day long activities other than eating or grilling could be catching up on gossip for the women, the men would fish, talk and take out the occasional boat that might show up. The kids would be in the ocean most of the day, picking up seashells, or building sandcastles. The best part was listening to all the stories all the older folks told…this was never corny to me, I was always fascinated. Like the first time my granny saw an airplane or had an ice cream cone…she threw the cone away…not knowing you were to eat it.
We would spend the whole day there. Some of us would stay after dark and we would build a bond fire (this is when you could without a permit) roast hot dogs and marshmallows, laying on blankets looking at the stars, watching fireflies.
Today, we still have these gatherings…but, sadly today, the group is much, much, smaller…seems people are too busy any more…all the cousins (my aged) have moved away to other states and have families of their own. And, all the aunts, uncles, grandparents, parents, except my dad have now passed on. All those stories have become precious memories for me and my family. Now, I tell these stories to keep these people and their stories alive for the now younger generation.
So my perfect day still is getting together at the ocean, doing a simple things with family, while there is still time…eating, laughing, telling stories for the next generation.
I voted for “Colorado Springs” because this is my hometown. We love it for the most part. However, all I need is a beach nearby and it would be perfect!
The single best afternoon in our hometown (Philly) would be catching a Phillies game with my family and hearing my sweet babies yell “Go Fiw-eeees!” =)
A perfect afternoon in my hometown is playing Dominoes with my parents. I try to do it as often as I can.
I voted for Good Old Days. A similiar reperesentation of my home town. We host the July 4th Fun Festival yearly, with a little bit of family oriented something for everyone. Former graduates and those that have moved away come back for a day or an afternoon to share again in smalltown life and talk about all of the “Good Old Days”. Many years of awesome afternoons spent with family and friends in a loving, caring community.
I would say the best afternoon would be a summer day spent at the free local zoo w/ a picnic on the grass. My kids love that place
Plus there’s an outdoor stage w/ wonderful shows to watch.
I too, grew up in Orlando, but after living in beautiful Tallahassee, FL for nearly 14 years, this is my ‘new’ hometown.
My favorite afternoons are enjoying a beautiful park…might even pack a picnic ; )
I voted for Bell Buckle, TN.
A perfect afternoon in my hometown of New York City would be to go down to Central Park. I’d get a hot dog from a street vendor and take a walk around in the park. It is so much like being out of the city, yet if you look up and beyond the park you see the skyscrapers. Thanks.
Mine would be strolling thru the very cute little shops in Kalona, IA!
I voted for Hamburg, New York which is about 30 minutes from where I live! Yay!
A perfect day in my hometown would have to be in the fall. The leaves are turning but it’s still in the 60′s. The apple trees are ready for picking and the smell of the fresh air is intoxicating. Later that day we will all sit b the fire in our backyard and roast marshmallows while listening to the crickets and watching the fire flies!
Thanks for the chance to win!
I voted for Colorado Springs, because I’m a huge fan of the Rockies!
My favorite afternoon in my own home town of Los Gatos, CA would involve going for a walk along N Santa Cruz Blvd to check out the shops, get some authentic Mexican food for lunch, and throw a Frisbee to the dog in the downtown park!
I voted for Hamburg, NY because NY is my home state and it is beautiful! My single best afternoon in my hometown (NYC) would be at a street fair enjoying music and great food and lots of vendors.
a great evening in my hometown of Greenville, SC, would have to be on a Wednesday evening during the month of May and September. My hometown puts on a movie showing called “Moonlight Movies.” They show all types of movies, but mostly old classics. A lot of people bring blankets, picnic baskets, and spend an enjoyable evening watching a movie under the stars! I LOVE it!
I voted for GA. GA is absolutely beautiful and there is so much to see and do. My perfect afternoon here in NC would be taking my family to the beach. Playing in the water and sand, having a picnic, and soaking up some sun, especially after this harsh winter we have had would be so nice right now.

I voted for Gaston. My single best afternoon is me and my kiddos hanging out at the park in 80 degree weather and having a picnic. I love it!!
A beautiful spring day on my grandparents’ porch with our family after spending the morning in the garden. The Appalachian Trail goes straight through the middle of town (and past the porch!) and crosses with the Virginia Creeper Trail, so there are always tons of new people to meet. My hometown is Damascus, VA.
Single best afternoon is kicking back with my son. We love to sit on our deck and talk, laugh, and read some good books. I love bonding with my son on such beautiful spring days. Thanks
My hometown – Washington DC – the best afternoon is a visit to the National Zoo with my preschool-age kids.
I voted. My best afternoon in Cincinnati–lunch at Skyline, a walk through the zoo as long as it’s sunny, followed by Graeter’s ice cream!
