Service

Three years ago we were saying good-bye as you left for Iraq. You came home…
Two years ago I was driving you to therapy and medical appointments. But you were alive….
One year ago the Navy officially declared you healed. Was it too late?
This weekend we celebrated a promotion, not a retirement.

2009 05 22 EHL 0077 Service

Many have left, not all have returned. Some have returned broken, not all are healed.

To all of those who have served, thank you for your sacrifice. I realize my freedom comes with a price, a price many have paid with their own lives. I am thankful, I will not forget.

Each holiday like this I put my flag out. I rember though out the day and pray for our country men and woman who go out each day and put their lives on the line just so I can have the freedom to live in this country. I say a prayer to God to thank him for these people. My heart swells up with pride when I see a person in uniform. And if I have the chance I always say thank you for your service. Its not much but I like to let people know I appreciate them. I work at the School cafteria and when I hear of our young men going into service I say God Bless you and I will be thinking of you. Because they have a hard road to go down before they get to the end. I appreciate them making that very hard decision. The money, bennifits you all get are not nearly enough for all your dh and people like him go though. So thank you. And God Bless you all.

I am so glad you posted this. My husband and I were just talking about how people forget what Memorial Day is all about–that it’s more than a day off work for drinking and barbecuing. Congratulations to your husband. My brother is in the army too and I am so glad he came home safely (a few times) even if he is still in the healing process….

  9. Cheri says:

  13. kiy says:

Thank you to your sweet hubby, for giving for us.

Thank you to YOU and your kids, for giving FOR US!

I well understand what you go through while he is off doing what he does. Little known fact about me, I was an Ombudsman (for a shore command) for 2.5 years when we lived in Japan. So I kind of know what you are going through, through the work that I did with families of Service Members. (Although we are not a Navy or even military family.)

Again, thank you. Our freedom and safety are in the hands of men and woman just like your husband. And if not for the families waiting at home, keeping things together, they would not be able to keep their minds on the job.

    Kiy

    P.S. Congratz on the promotion!

  17. Wendy says:

We are civilians living in a military (Army and Air Force) town. Since moving here 12 years ago we have met and become friends with many military families and have a new appreciation for the sacrifices made by these families. Please tell your husband thank you and congratulations!
    Wendy

  18. Laura Leigh says:

Congratulations on the promotion and thank you for a lovely post.

  19. We too are grateful for the military. We are grateful for an unexpected promotion. Even though we have to put our house up for sale less than a year after we bought it and say good-bye to friends we have just made, we are grateful to have had the oppotunity to meet them. In a time when many are losing jobs or are uncertain how long they will keep jobs, we are grateful for the sense of job security within the military.

  20. Trina says:

This one made me a bit teary… And what a lovely picture!

  21. Beautiful post. Congratulations to your hubby on many things – on the promotion, on healing (yeah!), on serving our country for so long and for continuing to do so! For you, Toni, congratulations for being the amazing wife and mother you are and for holding down the fort while he helped our brothers in arms fight this war, for helping him heal, for inspiring others, and for being you.

Congratulations doesn’t actually seem to be enough, actually. So, if there were a better word for it, filled with pride and admiration, consider it said to you, your husband, and to all who serve our country and who serve those fighting for our country – the wives.

  22. Stephanie says:

I admire our soldiers and their willingness to risk their lives for our country, and just as strong are the wives and children they must leave behind while they fight. So glad your husband has been kept safe, healed and promoted! May God continue to bless your family!

  28. Mamadogof7 says:

God Bless You All!!! Thank you for a beautiful and heartfelt post. Congrats on the promotion. You (both) earned it. I appreciate the post and it’s true meaning of this holiday. Too many people take this humbling holiday as a party weekend….forgetting the real reason for it. But, we retired military families know for sure what it is about. My husband is a proudly retired (altho wanted to stay on…) US Navy Parachute Rigger, from 20 years. Although, he never went to Iraq, and was too old and disabled for that, he wanted to go and really tried..sigh…Thanks to God, he is alive and well now. Praise to God for all of your family and many many others for their sacrifies for our wonderful country, and for thanks for keeping us free and able to sleep safely at night. Thank you to all our Armed Forced people near and far, and to our families who have paid the ultimate price for us. God bless you all and THANK YOU forever more!

  29. Michelle says:
