We just had three people in our county end up in the hospital because they ran a generator inside their home - sadly, their power had been cut off for nonpayment - apparently they didn't know that generator exhaust is full of carbon monoxide. We should all teach our children that charcoal fires, generators and gas grills belong outdoors, regardless of weather.

Wow! Until today, I have not paid attention to warnings about being ready for natural (or not so natural) disasters. That's especially scary since in case of a disaster my husband won't be able to leave the hospital (he's an RN). Every so often, the hospital runs drills to see how long it will take to get all available nurses to the hospital. To be truthful, I have rolled my eyes every time they have done this. Maybe I should do my own little drill every time...
Thank you for explaining how to get ready so thoroughly!!!!!

Excellent, excellent, excellent! Thank you so much for this. It seems to me that most other preparedness info I've ever come across smacks of so much paranoia I completely switch off. Your calm, commonsense and above all PRACTICAL approach has finally convinced me that this is something I need to take seriously once and for all. Thank you again.

Thank you for this post. It certainly does pay to be prepared rather than panic at the last minute or live with paranoid thoughts about 'what if...'. I have to admit that I am not as prepared as I thought I was. There were some things in your post that I have overlooked. My husband and I are not military, but he does often drive OTR and it is up to me to protect our girls while he is away. These tips really help.

as an addition, if you live or are stationed abroad, you should keep an emergency stash of cash in local currency AND your national currency. We keep enough US Dollars to get us on a flight out of country on our own and local currency in a smaller amount.

Copies of passports with a current pic laminated to the back can also be a lifesaver (at least prolonger).
