Hefty Trash Bags Review or My Life with a Toddler

Aren’t toddlers fun? I have a post coming in a few days that talks more extensively about my life with a toddler. Cora is giving her siblings a run for their money when it comes to toddlers who get themselves into a whole lot of trouble when mom isn’t looking. Her latest trick, throwing things in the kitchen garbage. This would be great if she was actually throwing away garbage, but she is throwing away things like silverware, cups, toys, and tupperware. Because of the way our garbage disposal is set up, we can’t fit a trash can under the kitchen sink so it is out in the open. It has a lid- but Cora quickly figured out how to get that open.

After I realized that the reason we have no forks is because they were all sitting at the city dump I quickly moved the trash can into the pantry. Let’s just say that The Happier Husband was not happy with garbage sitting in the pantry. I wasn’t thrilled with it either, but I really like eating my food with silverware.

About that same time as the “garbage-gate” was unfolding, the folks at Hefty contacted me and asked if I would review their new unscented trash bags with odor block technology. The fact that they were unscented got me interested (I personally do not like anything scented) and if they blocked odor this might be a solution to our trash can in the pantry problem.

I have to admit, that I was a bit skeptical at first ( I usually am) but after trying them for over a week I am happy to report that they really do block the smell. While my preference is to keep the garbage under the sink, I really like these bags and will continue to use them because there is definitely less stinky-ness going on in the pantry.

You can download a $1 off coupon for Hefty trash bags on their Facebook page.

Now if I can just find a toddler proof trash can I’ll be all set!

Good luck with garbage-gate. This is a timely post because I am in the process of moving the trash can to the garage because of my toddler and my dogs. This will work for me because the door to the garage is in the kitchen. Out of site, out of mind…at least I hope so.

Maybe you should invent that toddler proof trashcan. I’d buy one!

  3. Donna says:

For a toddler proof trashcan you can use the child proofing lock for fridges that just hooks the two doors together, or I believe their is a similar one for toilet seats. Might also adult proof it though.

  4. I had to toss our cute little Leap Frog barn refrigerator magnet toy because over time our ornery toddler tossed ALL the little characters that went with it. Who knows what else she tossed!

That’s EXACTLY what I was about to post. We had about three alphabets’ worth of letters for our Leap Frog toys from our daughter. However, due to my 19-month-old’s penchant for pitching, we have about 10 letters left. :(

Wow, why am I only just finding out about this website now?! This place has so many great ideas, thanks for sharing.

This is the reason we have significantly less spoons than the rest of the silverware! I didn’t realize what my boys were doing until it was too late! Good luck on the toddlerproof trash can!

  7. Rhonda GreenBarron says:

When my oldest was a toddler, he went through a stage where everything was thrown into the washing machine. Countless remote controls, matchbox cars, church shoes, opened boxes of cereal/goldfish/anything pourable…but the worst was cleaning up after the toilet paper rolls went through the spin cycle:/ I thought I would lose my mind before he got through this phase. (and yes, we watched him…I think he had an inviso-cloak).

  8. Linda says:

My son threw away a birthday check his Dad had received. After that, we put the trash can up higher.

  9. Heather says:

We’re having trouble keeping our 7 month old out of the trash. He can pull up on anything (last week he used the inside of the oven door, resulting in 2nd degree burns- all healed up now.) He tries to take things out, and we can’t fit it under the sink or in the pantry.

  10. Amy says:

How old is Cora now? I have one that will be two in November and she has recently gotten out of the “throw everything away” stage!

I really like those trash bags, btw! I’ve used them before and definitely noticed a difference!

  11. kristin says:

my 17 month old realized the trash can cabinet opens about 2 inches even with the child safety lock, just enough for him to throw stuff away, like a box of oatmeal packets i caught him in the act and quickly realized where all the oatmeal was going! This is a better stage than pulling up the heat/ac floor vents and throwing stuff down there…i had to double stick tape those to the floor.

My hubby and I were laughing as I read your post to him. My oldest (13 now) did the very same thing when she was a toddler. We’re not really sure what all we lost! We also had the same thing happen with forks over the past few years. I, like you, couldn’t figure out why there were no forks. We used to use paper plates all the time. So when my children would throw their plate away, the fork went with it. My step mother-in-law felt sorry for us, I guess, because she gave me a bunch of forks. I’ve quit using paper plates, and so far, we’re not losing anymore forks.

My littlest on wants to eat everything out of it and throw away stuff. we put a gate there and for now it works. We are moving into a new house soon and we have to figure out something new. My 4 and 5 year still throw silver ware away when they rake there plates. We brought them there own silver ware and it never went missing. I like the trash bags also

  14. Tracie says:

We had to do something with our trash can also. We finally put it on a step stool by the back door. This solved the problem b/c our toddler couldn’t reach it but everyone else could.
We have finally graduated to having it back on the floor again now!

  15. Cherrill says:

Toni, Do you thinkg Cora is only trying to cut back on all the things you have to pack for your upcoming move? I don’t either I do remember those days it seemed all my little silverware went into the trash.

I also want to let you know that I got my tire kit it came while we were in NC picking apples.. thanks again
    Happy Day,
    Cherrill

I no longer feel alone on this issue! We are down to 3 spoons(started out with 12) from son #2 and son #3 threw away several pairs of shoes we think(we did find one of the pair. We had to go outside and dig through garbage but did find them! And yes, I will dig through garbage to find a pair of NEW $30 pair of shoes!!!)

:) It’s so funny – life is just like this, isn’t it? We have a garbage can in the open in our kitchen, and about ten years ago we got a dog. The dog kept getting into the trash, so I built a wooden surround out of scrap lumber and plywood (about 3′ tall, to match the cabinet the garbage sits next to). It has held up well, with both our boys, however we did have to have a trash can with a lid for the throw-your-utensils-away stage. :) Thankfully, we didn’t lose too many spoons! I also found that the kids enjoyed eating with colorful kid-centered plastic silverware (shaped like animals) and that way, if they tossed it, it was cheap to replace and I didn’t get mad at them.
