Castle Cake

One thing I love about little kids is that it doesn’t take much to make them happy. With the success of the Barbie cake a few weeks back, I thought I was ready to attempt a castle cake. It seemed only slightly more difficult than the Barbie cake, and it was requested by the birthday girl.

I guess I didn’t count on a little thing called gravity, because almost as soon as the cake was frosted everything started to slide, the cake, the frosting, the candy. I was worried it might not survive until the next day. Thankfully it did, and our little princess didn’t seem to care one bit her cake leaned severely to one side.

And since the cake was already lopsided, I didn’t care that the birthday girl touched and messed with the cake all morning.

I’m so glad I found you. Way to go!!! Living on 1 income with 6 kids and one on the way!!! And you call yourself the “Happy Housewife!” I love it.

We have 5 kids and just moved ourselves to Costa Rica. Get this, we don’t have a car at all, live in a tiny house without an oven and dishwasher and we are happy! I never thought I could be, under these circumstances. :)

Can’t wait to be more inspired.

    Enjoy your day!

Way 2 go girl! You are doing a great job providing awesome cakes & memories for your kiddos. :-)

Maybe I’ll attempt a Mickey Mouse Cake for my trio’s 4th bday. I made a Elmo Cake for their 3rd Bday. I still need to post pics of it. :)

This remindes me of a cake my DH & I helped my best friend make for her son. I think we used 4 mixes & made grey icing. I wish I had a pic. It had marshmellows shaped into stones for the top & blue fruit roll ups for the mote. We cheated & used a plastic dragon. When we carried (me & her it was so freakin heavy) it into the skating rink all the other parties there came over & admired our handy work. a couple of kids w/ store cakes were jealous. This being said I still wimp out & buy my kids. I say that b/c our parties usually have alot of ppl attending & well I do everything else. We just had my daughter’s 10th & there were a little over 50 ppl. We actually had 2 cakes one for the kiddos & my mom made a coffee cake for those who did not wnat a really sweet cake. I took home about 4 pieces of the store one & my mom had about 4 pieces of hers. LOL it worked out fine.

  7. Love it! Absolutely adorable…you did a great job!

  8. Hey! You’ve posted 24 times since I’ve been here. First of all, congratulations on your new van. I guess you do not need to make a trip to Rockford to buy one. Also, great video of your family on T.V. I clicked on the link. What a great testimony to the Lord also–just how he has given you peace and joy in your pursuits. Do not feel bad that you aren’t at 100% optimum frugality at all times; we all have our ups and downs. I think you’re doing great. Besides, don’t you have a baby coming? I am such a slacker compared to you. Just keep doing the good work you are doing!

My daughter’s 2nd birthday is coming up. She’s all about ‘Dora the Explorer’, so we’ll see what I come up with!

What an awesome cake! Great pics! It is amazing how fast they grow.

  15. Beautiful cake and beautiful children! You’ve made me think I can do cakes like that. I need to try to make one for my daughter’s birthday. Thanks for posting your beautiful cakes. You make us feel like we could do it too. :)
    God bless,
    Amanda

  16. Okay, the cake is so very clever, but I’m having trouble determining which is more adorable: the birthday girl or the cake. Well done on both, lol!

    Have a lovely weekend!
    Kind Regards,
    Shani

I am making the same type cake for my soon to be 3yr olds party starting tomorrow! i hope my baby loves her cake as much as your baby loves hers.

Congrats on a great cake and another great memory for your daughter.

P.S. Any pointers you want to send my way will be greatly appreciated:)

Its beautiful! And so is the birthday princess!

  19. What a WONDERFUL cake and a BEAUTIFUL princess too. I have to give you the link to my 4ds castle cake. I KNOW what you mean by gravity taking over ! LOL. My 1ds helped me keep the corners from falling totally off and then I was sooooooooo happy.

  20. Natalie likes Faith’s cake, too. :) We’ll be decorating our castle cake later today.. she opted for castle over Barbie. :)

  21. Amy says:

That cake is beautiful!!! Great job!!!

  22. Erin says:

Adorable. If it’s a regular problem you have (of decorations sliding) it’s probably because your frosting is too soft. Just add more powdered sugar next time, until you can cut through it with a spatula and the “walls” don’t cave in. Just don’t add too much, or you won’t be able to spread it. :) (Then add water.)

  23. Dawn says:

Great cake. My kids talk about what they want their b-day cakes to look like way in advance. I will have to show this one to my youngest.
    Blessings,
    Dawn

  24. Sarah says:

What a pretty cake! Looks really yummy too! Great job and great attitude when things didn’t turn out like you expected.

  25. She is darling! Happy 3rd birthday to your baby girl! Great cake!

  26. My girl can’t decide if she wants the Barbie cake or the castle cake for her birthday. She has two months to figure it out.

    Thanks for the inspiration! Amy

  27. How sweet.

I made that same cake last year and had the same sliding problem. My daughter thought it was pefect. :)

  28. jami says:

I made a castle cake for my daughter also this year, and it did the same thing, sank to one side. Must be something about these castles that think they have to be leaning towers instead. Thanks for the inspiration.

  29. Rebecca says:

I love this cake. I say the sliding things add a cartoon quality that’s essential to all fairy princess castles. I admit when I first saw the spires I thought it was glitter even though logic tells me its sugar.

I think it helps to toss the frosted cake in the freezer for 15 minutes or so before adding decorations. I am not really experienced though, so it might be mostly psychological.

  30. Antoinette says:

Your cake is beautiful – I’ll have to show it to my daughter (17) who loves to be creative with cakes.
Your birthday girl is so adorable.
    Antoinette

  31. Nancy M. says:

I think it looks awesome, even if it did lean a little. Your birthday girl is so beautiful!
