Blizzard 2010

Welcome to the Blizzard of 2010, or the REAL eat from the pantry challenge. With terrible roads and three feet of snow, we are stuck in our house for the next few days. It is still snowing as I type this post, but I am hopeful it will stop tonight. Thank goodness we have power, unlike many other families, and food in our pantry as the grocery store shelves are bare! I am getting a little creative with meals and hope to share some of my blizzard food later this week.

As promised here are a few snow pictures. I didn’t actually go outside to take them because I didn’t want my lens to get ruined, so I stood in the doorway and shot a few from out the window. Sorry they aren’t the best quality. I am sure the snow will be here a few more days so I can post some more shots soon!

Well, I *thought* we had a lot of snow until I saw this. We would be without power if we got that much snow.

  2. Now THAT is snow! Wowzas! I hope you guys are staying warm! Oh- and I love your little one in her bathing suit! My daughter has the same one, and she wears it all the time too.

  3. I love how “appropriate” the little critter is dressed! HAHAHA!!!

  4. Ashley says:

Love the Little Mermaid swimsuit… have fun in the snow! :)

  5. Long ways from 72 degree Blissdom, huh? We are sooo snowed in as well.

  6. i love that your daughter is in a swimsuit. that would SO happen at my house. my daughter always wants to wear the most weather inappropriate clothing she has.

  7. Michelle says:

Sounds like you need to make it back down to sunny Orlando! I think the low was a bone chilling 47 today ;)

  8. Jessica says:

I too love that she’s wearing a swimsuit. As if to say, “show me what you got weather, you won’t get me down!”

    Stay warm and safe!
    Jessica

  9. Here’s to eating out of the pantry! Thankfully we have some powdered milk that we can get creative with this week since we have almost no milk left! Hopefully the plows will come through SOON!

  10. Liz says:

I think my daughter has been talking to your daughter about appropriate wardrobe options for snow…

  11. Beth says:

What is it with cold weather and kids wanting to run around half dressed?! My little girl (will be 5 next month) just ran through the house with nothing on but her pantyhose! I’m sitting here with a fleece jacket on and fully dressed. Sigh.

  12. Meagan says:

Love your pictures! We’re up in Carroll County, so we’re probably experiencing pretty much the same weather. We stocked up well before the first part of the blizzard, so we should be set for awhile. And, I just saw the first plow of the day down my road. Yay!! Glad to hear that you have power, still.

  13. Jennifer says:

Yep, we’re in the city and I can no longer see my fence! I am so glad that I’m not the only one with a child who dresses opposite the weather. My son has been running around in just shorts all week! I am definitely grateful as well to have power. Looks like we will have lots of stories to tell after this one!

  14. Melissa says:

Great pictures! and tell little bit that I LOVE her little mermaid swimsuit! You can tell her of all the comments, most were about her!!!!
    You guys hang in there!

melissa in sunny south carolina :)

  15. Sheri says:

Sorry! I think we are responsible for sending the latest storm your way. We only got a foot though here in Minnesota. We are used to a lot of snow so most things keep running as usual – no loss of power or food shortages! I hope you guys survive and are able to shovel yourselves out after the plow goes by!

  16. Marsha says:

OH WOW. it’s up to your windows!

i don’t think a shovel would cut it. you need a plow! (loving that swimsuit!)

  17. Andrea says:

It sure makes me feel better that my lil one isnt the only one who runs around inapproproatley dressed for the weather my husband just dosent get it I just sayat least sheswearing somethig :)

  18. Southern Gal says:

Love that first picture. Is she wearing a bathing suit?

And wow. That’s a lot of snow. We would be at a stand still for weeks with that kind of snow.

  19. Melissa says:

Looks like where we live…we have about 2 1/2 feet of snow…our road is not plowed and don’t believe it will be until late tomorrow if then. Luckily, I had gone to the grocery store last Thursday when the first snow storm came through! Stay warm…and can’t wait to see what recipes you come up with!!

  20. Stephanie says:

the girls are too cute! I guess one day I will be there huh :)

thanks for the pics.. that’s a ton of snow! :)

  21. Our powers been on and off but we dodged the bullet with the last snowstorm. It hit a few hours north and “all” we got was ice.

  22. Kelly says:

BEAUTIFUL! I know you want sunshine, but I am weird…I love the snow and cold. It gives me the perfect excuse to stay in my pj’s inside :) .

  23. Tonya says:

Glad you have power AND that your pantry is stocked.

  24. Nancy M. says:

It’s beautiful! But, I’ll bet you wish it would go away now! I’m glad to hear you still have power and food! Stay warm!

  25. I laughed to myself at your daughter in a swimsuit by the snow! We have a ton of snow all winter, but if we are staying in for the day my kids often dress like it is summer!

  26. Barb says:

WOW! The three years we were stationed at Meade we barely received snow. We just left in September for Alaska, and we have nothing compared to you all!!!! I guess we left just in time ;) Good Luck!
    Blessings!

  27. Kristi says:

OOooh those are pretty….but where I live (Maine) that’s pretty normal *ugh* lol…I am very much enjoying reading in blogland how people who don’t normally get that much snow are handling it :) I hope your kiddos have fun playing in it!! The sun after a storm makes everything look so magical don’t you think?
Looking forward to seeing what kind of ‘snow’ meals you make from your pantry! Here’s hoping you don’t lose power! :)

  28. Angela O says:

My in-laws are up your way and I am actually jealous!!!! We even thought about heading up there just to be snowed in with them! We only got 6 inches here in Central Va.

  29. Allyson says:

THAT is a lot of snow! Love the kids’ wardrobe. :-)

  30. We live in Harford County, Maryland and we are experiencing the same blizzard. Hubby is really appreciating the stocked freezers and pantry. School has been closed all week so the kids are enjoying life!

  31. Ivy says:

We’re suffering with you at the UnscriptedLife household too. It’s amazing we’re still finding places to put it all. Stay warm and safe!

  32. Oh my goodness I can’t even imagine that amount of snow. Love that your daughter was in a bathing suit, clearly its warm inside.

Are you going to make snow ice cream? Being a Texas gal its one of those things I’ve always wanted to do.

  33. Lana says:

The kids don’t outgrow that halfdressed thing until after college. We live in a college town and whenever I see an 18-22 year old at Wal Mart in the winter in shorts and flip flops I think-’your Momma doesn’t know you are dressed that way in the cold’. I have 3 away at college though andI know they are dressed just like it. What can a Mother do?

  34. Mrs. White says:

    The pictures are beautiful!

It’s so pretty to have so much snow, but I know it is hard when you can’t go out.

    Blessings,
    Mrs. White (in Vermont)

  35. Dee says:

WOW! I’ve never seen even close to that much snow! I would like to see a LITTLE-but NOTHING near that much! :)

  36. We have that bathing suit, too! It must have been a common one. Toni, you are lucky you missed the first barrage of snow! It’s getting old real fast. We are blessed to have a stocked pantry, but it’s slowly getting depleted. DH went to work today so he’s going to stop at Aldi’s on the way home. Yay!

  37. Shirley says:

I agree with a previous comment – I just thought we had snow – we have about 5 inches and we’re excited. But then, we live in Texas where snow is a novelty! Even though we’re not completely snowed in, I’m not going anywhere today and am thankful that my pantry is full and running over!

  38. Wendi says:

We’re up in Frederick County ~ where a state of emergency was declared this morning because so many roads were impassable! Glad we’re stocked up with food here, and electricity too! The snow is beautiful though ~ I may not think so when it’s still here in a few weeks though :)

  39. Laura says:

I’m sure you don’t want to hear this, but I’m a wee bit jealous of all that snow! They kept promising me big snow amounts here in the midwest, but nothing like the amounts you received.

  40. Sherry says:

Oh, my goodness! Your daughter is funny with the swimsuit! Maybe she could be with the Polar Bear Club. Hope you get bailed out soon!

  41. Cherrill Hartsfield says:

Loving your snow, Toni. I feel if it has to be cold please let it snow, and we live in Florida. My lil one (11) on the 23rd use to have a purple tu-tu that her aunt bought her we would have to beg and bribe her to wash that thing.

  42. Nancy says:

We had power throughout the last two storms…it took us the better part of the day to dig out cars and driveway, though. I am thankful we had so much food on hand – I hit the commissary for a few essentials a week ago and we’ve only had to stock up on cat food in between snows. (I am out of bread flour now – guess what I’ve been doing!)

  43. michelle says:

i am so glad to see that my child is not the only one who runs around the house in a bathing suit with snow on the ground.

  44. Okay, I know this will tick everyone around you off, but I’m jealous! Usually we have a ton of snow by now, which really isn’t that big a deal because my husband’s the one who shovels it :) . But this year we’ve had virtually nothing. So no snowmen, and most of all, no cross-country skiing!

I know what you mean about eating through your cupboards, though. I read once that most people have $285 worth of groceries in their cupboards with no real plan. So you can be creative! Cranberries with pork and beans. Jello with spaghetti! It may not sound good together (or taste good together), but at least you won’t starve!

  45. Joelle says:

LOL, I had to laugh at the first picture… love the nightgown and silly swim suit! haha… In the dead of winter! This will become blackmail material when she becomes a teenager, I am sure. ;-)
